Favorite Anime Part 2

Some other anime I like. Maybe you do too. Or these can be added to your to-watch list. 1. Lovely Complex This is a cute and funny contemporary romance anime about a teenage girl named Risa Koizumi who has been good friends with a guy in her class named Atsushi Otani for a while. She starts to feel romantic feelings towards him, but he doesn't reciprocate at first. Risa's friends and even Otani's friends constantly help Risa out to get closer to Otani, but it doesn't always work out smoothly. As more things get in her path, eventually Risa and Otani do become a couple.  This was such a funny and cute show! I remember a lot of laugh out loud funny scenes from this anime. This show will tug at your heartstrings. Oh yeah, and one of Risa and Otani's friends is a transgender girl and she's portrayed in a really positive manner. So there's good trans rep in this anime. (This is some minor transphobia at the beginning when the other characters find out she's

NANCY DREW AND THE SECRET OF SHADOW RANCH SPOILER FREE REVIEW

Image
Welcome back to another spoiler free review of the Nancy Drew books! Nancy Drew and the Secret of Shadow Ranch follows Nancy and her cousins Bess and George visiting an aunt and uncle of theirs at Shadow Ranch in Phoenix, Arizona.  The place has been reported to be haunted, and part of it may be due to  a local legend of a historical figure who lived in the area named Dirk Valentine who left a treasure nearby for his long lost love, Frances. At the same time, a  neighbor girl named Alice recently had her artist father go missing, so Nancy has to help her find him. Like the previous books, the two mysteries end up having to do something with each other at the end. But I gave this book 4.5 stars because there is one small part where Nancy and her friends dress up as Native Americans (referred to as Indians in the book), but luckily there is one Native American character in the book named Mary Deer who is portrayed positively. She is the owner of a shop and she helps Nancy briefly wit

SLEEPING AROUND BY MORGAN VEGA SPOILER FREE REVIEW

Image
Now this is a massively underrated book! Sleeping Around by Morgan Vega  is a YA contemporary novel about a college freshman named Coralee Reed (who prefers to be called Corey) who is in extended foster care and loves to play violin. Her first year of college does not start out smoothly because she didn't get into the music program at her college, so she ends up sharing a room with two other girls. One of the roommates named Emma is really sweet and quickly becomes her friend, but the other roommate named Harper is really mean to both of them, making their living situation hard. Corey finds out from her orchestra professor that if she makes first chair in the violin section, she could get her own dorm room. She realizes she has to compete with her long-time rival, Dylan, to get it, because since they knew each other in high school he has always been first chair and she second. Not sleeping well at night takes a toll on her being able to do well in orchestra and her other classes,

MILK AND HONEY REVIEW

Image
This was another book I got as a gift. A poetry collection from the wonderful Rupi Kaur ! Milk and Honey is a collection of poems regarding facing trauma, love, healing, and feminism. They are all poems on Rupi's innermost thoughts based on her real-life experiences, and she wanted to share them with the world so people like me and you know you're never alone.  Most of the poems are so tiny but very emotional, moving, and imapactful. Occasionally Rupi herself uploads some of these poems and others she writes on her Instagram page .  The drawings, which resemble sketches more, are beautiful too.  I gave this book 5 stars. This book left such an impact on me. Rupi Kaur is one of my favorite poets! Even if you don't read much poetry, this collection is worth checking out. Who are some of you favorite poets?

FAVORITE ANIME PART 1

Another blog post that is just a list, but worth checking out. Here are some of my favorite anime/manga series. Some of these might be your favorites too, or maybe these are good recommendations if you are thinking of getting into anime and manga. 1. Fruits Basket This is about the 2019-2021 reboot, which covers the whole story. The original manga was written by Natsuki Takaya in the late 90s and early 2000s. Fruits Basket is about a teenage girl named Tohru Honda who has recently been orphaned, and finds herself beginning to live with the Sohma clan. She finds out that for generations, several members of their clan have been cursed with the spirits of the animals of the Chinese Zodiac, and they many of them have had difficult lives growing up so they all carry a lot of trauma with them. When Tohru comes along, their lives start to turn around for the better, and even Tohru herself carries a lot of baggage that she slowly learns to how to handle thanks to her new family.  This is suc

THE PRINCE AND THE DRESSMAKER SPOILER FREE REVIEW

Image
Another sweet graphic novel you need to read! The Prince and the Dressmaker by Jen Wang  is a YA historical fiction graphic novel about a young girl named Frances who lives in France at the time it was still a kingdom. She is a seamstress working in a clothing and tailor store. By surprise, she gets hired to make clothes for the prince of the country, Prince Sebastien. As she gets to know him, he has a secret: sometimes he likes to wear dresses and look like a girl. But he doesn't want anyone else to know about it because it might ruin his reputation as a future husband and king. Throughout the course of the story, Frances and Sebastien deepen their friendship and try to achieve their individual goals of becoming a famous dressmaker and gaining the confidence to show their gender-nonconformity in public, mostly through sneaking off to parties. and such. This was such a cute book! The artwork was gorgeous, the characters were great. I might be a little bit biased because I just re

NANCY DREW AND THE MYSTERY AT LILAC INN SPOILER FREE REVIEW

Image
TW: Things catching on fire mentioned  Another great Nancy Drew mystery! I gave it 5 stars . In this book, Nancy Drew is staying at the historical Lilac Inn for the wedding of her friend, Emily. When she arrives there, things start to get weird. Things vanish and move around, and some parts of the Inn's infrastructure seem to be malfunctioning. The Inn is rumored to be haunted, and Nancy is trying to figure out the logical explanation behind all of the mishaps. At the same time, someone stole Nancy's personal information and is pretending to be her, and Nancy starts getting accused of things she didn't do. So then Nancy has to figure out who her imposter is and put a stop to them.  Like the previous novels, the two seemingly separate mysteries happen to be connected at the end, and there are a ton of red herrings that will through you off course as you try to figure out the mystery with Nancy and her friends. I should mention that in the second half of the book there is a b

The Guilty Reader Book Tag

I don't know who made this tag but it's been floating around on YouTube for a couple of years, and I thought I would do it. As usual, feel free to do this tag if you see this! 1. Have you ever regifted a book you've been given? No, I never have. Even if it's a book I didn't particularly like, I often times still keep it because it's the thought that counts of the person who gave it to me.  2. Have you ever said you read a book when you haven't? Yes! But I only do that if I have already read a significant chunk of the book but never actually finished it. But I usually do admit it when I DNF a book.  3. Have you ever borrowed a book and never returned it? Oh yes. I one time borrowed a copy of Runaway Ralph by Beverly Clearly from my fifth grade teacher and I never returned it. I still have it in my house after all these years. I don't think she ever noticed I never brought it back...unless she's reading this right now (sorry, Miss!). But it's bee

WITCH HAT ATELIER VOLUME 1 SPOILER FREE REVIEW!

Image
I've seen this manga floating around the Internet for a while, but I've only picked it up now. It is so worth the read! Witch Hat Atelier by Kamome Shirahama is a high fantasy series about a girl named Coco who is interested in magic. She is told she can't do magic because she was not born a witch, but she believes with the right tools and skills, she can become one. MY PLAIN JANE SPOILER FREE REVIEW

Image
TW: Brief mentioning of death This is book 2 of the Lady Janies series by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows. My Plain Jane is a historical fantasy retelling of Jane Eyr e by Charlotte Bronte. It follows the perspective of three characters: Charlotte Bronte (yes, she's a character in this book), Jane Eyre, and a new character named Alexander Blackwood.  The story begins at Lowood School where the headmaster, Mr. Brocklehurst, has been murdered. No one knows who did it, but all the students and even some teachers are rather happy that Mr. Brocklehurst is no longer around tormenting them. At the same time, Charlotte, a student at the school, wants to be a writer, and is trying to write a fictional account of her friend Jane, a student who likes to paint. Jane also has the ability to see ghosts, which she at first tells no one about, and is constantly talking to the ghost of her dead friend, Helen Burns. One day after sneaking out to a pub near the school, Jane sees a ghost

THE LITTLE PRINCE AUDIOBOOK SPOILER FREE REVIEW

Image
Here is the link to the audiobook video:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APG1upS8LDw&ab_channel=ChristopherWilliams This is my first audiobook of the year. It is of Antoine de Saint-Exupery's novella The Little Prince. While it may look like a kid's picture book story (and can still be read as one), it is also a story of deep philosophical themes that can hit harder when you are an adult. That's why the book is so popular among adults as well. The plot itself is about an unnamed narrator who is a pilot who crash landed in the Sahara Desert. As he is trying to fix his plane, a young boy, The Little Prince, asks him to draw him a sheep. The narrator is not confident in his drawing skills as he gave up drawing as a kid a long time ago when the grown ups in his life couldn't understand his drawings of boa constrictors. He draws a sheep inside of a box for The Little Prince, which satisfies him, and then he tells the narrator about his planet and flower, his journey o

LEGENDS AND LATTES SPOILER FREE REVIEW

Image
This fantasy book is a future classic. I am telling you I gave this 5 stars . The story of Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldree follows an orc named Viv (the green one) who decided to move on with her life of high intensity quests and settle down in a small town called Thune and open a coffee shop. We follow her fixing up her coffee shop from the bottom up with the help of several new friends, and also get an insight of how she figures out what kind of coffee and desserts her customers would like, as well as the kind of people that visit her shop. Viv thinks at first that her success of her coffee shop might be due to the Scalvert's Stone she acquired on her last adventure, which legend has it brings good luck. But as time goes on there is more to it that meets the eye. And this happens in many ways. There is a subplot where she has to impress the Madrigal, a shady figure in Thune. One of Viv's friends she used to go on adventures with also turns out to be not as nice as he

NANCY DREW AND THE BUNGALOW MYSTERY SPOILER FREE REVIEW

Bloom Graphic Novel Spoiler Free Review

Image
I was able to finish the graphic novel Bloom by Kevin Panetta these past few days. Here is the summary and here are my thoughts on it. Bloom is a story about a Greek-American young man named Ari who has a band with his friends, and they want to move to the big city to live together and maybe make it big with their band. But his father wants him to take over the bakery that he and his family own. Ari did used to love baking, but over the years fell out of love with it due to his strained relationship with his family. Ari decides to find someone else in the area to hire to do all the baking and running of the shop. He ends up recruiting another young man, a Samoan guy named Hector who is around his age, to do it. While working together they become good friends and Hector even restores Ari's love of baking. However, Hector isn't the biggest fond of the rest of Ari's friends, especially one of them named Cameron because he's really toxic, but Ari doesn't realize how

GOALS FOR 2023

Since it is a new year, I have decided to tell you all ahead of time what plans I have for this blog! Aside from doing spoiler free book reviews and tags, I have decided to start doing the following: Have some more posts that are not book related, aside from my art posts (that are now mostly on Instagram, if you haven't noticed). This can range from talking about cartoons to stories about my life. I know, it might seem weird since this is primarily a book blog, but I thought it would be a good way to get to know me better and change up the conversations once in a while. Besides, I have other hobbies aside from reading! I will not be making posts about marketing. When I first started this blog I said that I might make posts related to all things marketing, but I never did these past few months, and the desire dwindled over time. I still love my marketing degree and will still work in all things marketing in my private life, but I will not be discussing it here since most of my fol
