Bitter Review

Image
TW: mentions of trauma from foster care, and of being hurt by law enforcement.  Bitter by Akwaeke Emezi is the prequel to Pet , which I read and reviewed earlier this year. You can read that review here .  The story is about Jam's mother (from the first book) back when she was a teenager and an art student. She lives in a boarding school called Eucalyptus which is a safe haven from the rest of Lucille--which has recently been having a political uprising. Bitter wants to make Lucille a better place for her and her new social circle (consisting of her friend Blessing, Blessings girlfriend Alex, and Bitter's new boyfriend Aloe), but she finds it hard when she has her own trauma from being in different foster homes. She would rather paint and stay in Eucalyptus than go to protests with Assata. Assata is the movement of people overthrowing the corrupt people in power, which some people Bitter knows are a part of. Bitter eventually learns that she can make her own change through he...

A Kind of Spark Review

Image
A Kind of Spark by Elle McNicholl is a middle grade book about Addie, who is autistic. At school, she learns about how historically, in her small town in Scotland, they used to execute women they considered witches. They weren't actually witches--they were women who were "different". Probably autistic like Addie! She and her new friend Audrey (and with some help from Addie's older sister, Keedie, who is also autistic) all try to raise money to implement a memorial to the victims, but it isn't easy. Addie also has to deal with a bully teacher, a bully in her class named Emily (who is now friends with her ex-friend Jenna) and her other sister Nina, who actually has a good heart but frequently misunderstands Addie and Keedie.  It's a very short and simple story, but it had so many moments that made me emotional! If you didn't already know, I am autistic, too. Addie was so relatable. Overall, reading this was very cathartic to me.  I gave it 5 stars . I want ...

Nicola Traveling Around the Demon's World Vol 1 and 2 Review

Image
Nicola Traveling Around the Demon's World by Asaya Miyanagi is a cozy fantasy manga series that is 4 volumes long. I read the first two so far! Nicola is a sweet and naive human witch who accidentally finds herself in the Demon World. She forms a bond with a somewhat grumpy but kindhearted demon named Simon, who is a traveling merchant. There isn't much of a plot--it's mostly slice of life just in a fantasy world. Nicola and Simon travel from place to place, meet new people (or reunite with old friends), and get into shenanigans. Simon is almost always trying to buy or sell something, and Nicola learns more about the demon world and practices her magic.  It's very funny and heartwarming! It gets surprisingly emotional at times, too. I gave both books 5 stars. I need to find and read the last two volumes!

One Piece Heroines 2

Image
The One Piece anime is back! But I am still in the Wano arc as of writing this.  Anyway, I finally read One Piece: Heroines Volume 2 ! Just like the first one, this follows a bunch of short stories about different girls from the One Piece universe. The girls this time are: Boa Hancock, Tashigi, Reiju, and Uta. We also get a bonus chapter of Nami and Robin! My favorite story is Uta's story--it was really sweet! My second favorite was Reiju's because it made me emotional. Tashigi's story is cool, too, and so is Nami and Robin's. I didn't really like Hancock's story--it was a little odd. So I gave the book 4.5 stars . But if you're a One Piece fan like me, you'll probably like this too! I heard that the Heroine's novels are getting an adaptation soon, coming out this July.
