  The second literary fiction book I've read that was originally published in Japanese! The first one I read was Sweet Bean Paste by Durian Sukegawa back in 2023. You can read that review here . We'll Prescribe You a Cat by Syou Ishida is one of those books where each chapter is its own story. They all follow the same formula: a person has a problem. They find themselves going to this mysterious psychiatric clinic where they get to keep a cat for about a week to help them with their problem. The problem is resolved, in an unusual way. The person found themselves very attached to their cat and end up keeping the cat.  It's a very heartwarming book, and it has great conversations about mental health! The book also has an overarching mystery with the clinic itself because it's so unusual. The last two chapters do answer some questions about the mysterious cat clinic, but a lot of it is still pretty open-ended and up for your interpretation. I won't get into it here b...

    This graphic novel is not what you think (in a good way)! This first volume of Super Boba Cafe by Nidhi Chanani takes place over summer break in San Francisco. It follows 13 year old Aria helping her Nainai (grandmother) at her boba tea shop. The boba tea shop hasn't had a lot of customers lately, but when Nainai's pet cat Bao has kittens, it turns into an unofficial cat cafe, thus attracting more customers. Aria is glad that now her grandmother's boba tea shop is thriving, but Nainai also seems to be keeping a secret from Aria... Meanwhile Aria has trouble befriending a named Jay, who lives next door to her Nainai. Aria is anxious to make new friends because during the school year, she got cyberbullied by someone she thought she could trust. The Creepy Cat series by Cotton Valent was recommended by @rhymingvine over on Instagram.  Wanna know something weird about this series? I actually read the first volume back in 2023, I gave it 4 stars, and in that review I said I would read the rest of the books, but somehow I forgot about them until now. You can view that post here .  Well, I finally read all 4 books! What do I think about the series as a whole? The rest of the series is not what I expected! Book 1 is very much slice of life with Flora (our 20-something goth artist lady MC) dealing with Creepy Cat's magical shenanigans in her new house, along with her new friend Oscar, a police officer who has had a crush on her since they both were in high school.   So I picked up this graphic novel on a whim at the library a few days ago because I needed something smaller to read as I am reading three bigger books. Well, this was fun! Creepy Cat by Cotton Valent is a slice of life gothic graphic novel of a goth girl named Flora who moves into a gothic mansion she inherited from a family member of hers, and discovers the place is "haunted" by some cat-looking creature who can shapeshift, multiply itself, and do other odd things. Flora is very excited to have this cat, but he sometimes makes her life difficult, and sometimes the police gets involve. The policeman who visits her house frequently is named Oscar, and Flora eventually befriends him, too. Flora and Oscar then try to figure out what this cat like creature is and why he behaves so strange while going about their daily lives.  I know it sounds like there is an overarching plot, but for the most part, there isn't really a cohesive plot.
