I FINALLY READ THE PRINCESS AND GRILLED CHEESE SANDWICH!

Image
OMG this book was so cute! Now I am craving grilled cheese sandwiches😋. The Princess and the Grilled Cheese Sandwich by Deya Muniz is about Lady Camembert, who like women and obviously doesn't want to marry any men. But she is left orphaned and her father's last wish was that she moved somewhere new in the country of Fondue with her lady-in-waiting Feta and pretend to be a man. So she starts living as Count Camembert. But she has to keep a low profile as much as possible, while still expecting to get married.  Cam (that's her nickname) quickly gets bored being at home all day, so she decides to attend a ball hosted by the princess of the kingdom, named Princess Brie. She quickly catches the attention of Brie and they become friends. They finds themselves falling in love with each other, but Cam is worried about her secret of pretending to be a boy getting out. Luckily, Brie's other friends, Ricotta and Gorgonzola (or Zola for short) help out with the situation. They ...

Unfamiliar Volume 2 Brief Review

Image
Yeah, I just talked about the first book a few days ago, but I got to talk about the sequel! Something I rarely ever do, but that's because this sequel blew my mind! Unfamiliar Volume 2 by Haley Newsome is the sequel to Unfamiliar Volume 1 . In this sequel, it is a lot more story driven, a lot more darker, and a lot more serious. There's more character development, and twists about some characters we've met in previous volumes. While out witchy girls continue dealing with mishaps mostly involving ghosts, two of our characters fall in love (yup, a Sapphic romance! 😃). But overall, it still has the same cozy vibes just like the first book. A pure 5 star book ! I hope I convinced you to put these books on your TBR if you haven't already. I'd seriously love to read anything else this author puts out! I've also started watching her YouTube channel. 😉

Fake Dates and Mooncakes Review

Image
The PERFECT romance book! Fake Dates and Mooncakes by Sher Lee is about Dylan, a teenage boy who works at his Aunt Jade's Singaporean Chinese takeout shop. His family has been struggling financially, and they are worried they won't be able to keep the shop open. Dylan finds out about a mooncake making contest run by a celebrity chef named Lawrence Lim. The winner will get their restaurant showcased on Lim's TV show. Dylan decides to enter the contest, thinking if the shop makes some publicity, they might get more customers.  Then, one day Dylan accidentally gets the order wrong of a rich customer named Adrian, and Adrian makes a big deal out of it. Adrien's equally rich friend Theo, who was there when the incident happened, makes up for it by visiting and eating at the takeout shop. Eventually Theo and Dylan become friends, and Theo decides to make a donation to Dylan's aunt Jade to keep the shop afloat for much longer. Dylan's family is very happy about it. Th...

She Gets the Girl Review

Image
Have you ever been unsure if you were going to like a popular book, but you give it a try and you end up liking it? That's what happened to me with this book! She Gets the Girl by Rachael Lippencott and Alyson Derrick is about two young women in their first year of college--Alex and Molly. Alex does not have the best life at home (parents had a nasty divorce, mother fell into alcoholism, financial struggles, etc.) and she just broke up with her girlfriend, Natalie. Molly is very shy and had friendship troubles in high school, and she wants to get out of her comfort zone in college and finally make some real friends. Alex and Molly meet at a party and Alex finds out about Molly's crush on another girl named Cora. Cora actually went to Molly's high school and is now at the same university. Alex befriends Molly and they make a deal to help Molly get Cora. Alex also makes a deal with her ex-girlfriend Natalie to show her that she is capable of opening up to people by befriend...

Magical Boy Volume 1 Review

Image
I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed this! The first volume of Magical Boy by The Kao is about Max--a trans guy who is descended from a line of magical warriors who have to protect the earth from these giant bug monsters who feed off of peoples' negative feelings. The magical warriors of his family got their powers from the goddess Aurora. Max doesn't like this new magical warrior responsibility at first, as his outfit looks really feminine, and his mother (the previous magical warrior) expects him to do his magical duties the traditional way. That includes "acting" really feminine, something Max is obviously uncomfortable with. But with the help of his friend Jen, a new friend named Sean, and an enemy turned friend named Pyper, Max begins to do things his own way. They work together to try to stop the bug monsters from destroying the Earth. His magical outfit also looks less feminine over time.  This book was a blast! I loved this take on a magical warrior...

Underrated Books Part 4

Well, what do you think? More book I barely see anyone online talk about that need more love!  Three of these I read this year and one I read last year. There will be links to full reviews and to the authors' websites too, if applicable. 1. Flip the Script by Lyla Lee . Hana is a Korean-American teenage actress who lives in South Korea. She gets to be the lead role in a new K-Drama, and she gets to act alongside Bryan, who is a popular teenage K Pop star. He plays the love interest in the story. However, the initial ratings for the show don't look so good, and the company president wants them to fake date, thinking it will boost ratings. They're reluctant at first, but Hana and Bryan agree to it. Eventually, things get more complicated when the director decides to add a love triangle to the K Drama, and the other love interest gets played by none other than veteran K-Drama actress Minjee. Minjee is also Hana's best friend, and Hana has secretly had a crush on her for ...

The 2nd and 3rd Tea Dragon Books

Image
I can't delve too deep into them since they are the 2nd and 3rd book of the series, but I will tell you right now that I loved them and I gave them both 5 stars! They are just as heartwarming, whimsical, magical, and sweet as the first one, and have both great LGBT and disability rep. I will tell you the 2nd book is a prequel to the first one. And in the third book the characters from both the 1st and 2nd book all come together for a perfect conclusion.  The Tea Dragon Society series is now an all-time favorite graphic novel series for me. It literally had everything I love in fictional storytelling. Thank you Kay O'Neill for your creation!

I FINALLY READ THE LONG WAY TO A SMALL ANGRY PLANET!

Image
Now this is a book that lives up to the hype! The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers is about a group of space travelers in a spaceship called the Wayfarer who have been selected to create a space tunnel between two planets that recently had a war with each other in hopes to bring peace. The setting is in the far future where Earth has become mostly inhabitable and many humans have left Earth to go live on other planets (mostly Mars). Those humans are called Exodans, by the way. However, the real focus of the story is about the relationships (friendship, family, and romantic) between our main space traveling team and the wordbuilding as they visit and talk about many different planets along the way. The cast is as follows: Rosemary, a human from Mars who gets to work on the Wayfarer as a clerk and is trying to escape her dark past. Then there's Ashby, another human who is the stern but kind captain of the Wayfarer, and is in a relationship with the captain of a...

Midyear Freakout Tag

Yeah, we are technically a little past the midyear point, but better late than never! 1. Best book you read so far this year?  There's too many to pick! I guess I will have to go with Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan. 2. Best sequel you read so far this year?  Garlic and the Witch by Bree Paulsen 3. New releases you haven't read yet, but want to.  Of course, I can't guarantee I will  get around  to them this year, but I have my eye on these three in particular: Imogen Obviously by Becky Albertalli, Deep as the Sea, Red as the Sky by Rita Chang-Eppig, and Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Fairies by Heather Fawcett. 4. Most anticipated release for the second half of the year.  Heartstopper Volume 5 by Alice Oseman! 5. Biggest disappointment of the year.  Again, too many to name, but I will have to go with 2 of my DNFs: I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte .  6. Biggest surprise of...

COSMOKNIGHTS 1 REVIEW

Image
I loved this one! Note: I actually read this back in June, but it was at the very end of June, and I decided to instead include it in my July reads. Either way, it's worth a read! Cosmoknights by Hannah Templar follows a young woman named Pandora (or Pan as she is usually called) who lives on another planet named Viridian somewhere far off in the future. She is secretly friends with the princess of said planet, named Tara. Tara becomes tired of being raised in isolation and asks Pan to help her escape, which she does, but then the rest of the royal family and the planet get angry at Pan for helping Tara escape.  So Pan ends up spending most of her time in her father's repair shop years after that incident. Around that the same time, there are these televised competitive games where different knights from different planets across the galaxy fight to compete for the hand of the princesses of certain planets. Two of the knights are frequent winners, and they're actually a ...

MOONSTRUCK VOLUME 1 REVIEW

Image
Moonstruck by Grace Ellis is a graphic novel taking place in a world that looks like ours but everyone is a magical creature of some kind. The story follows a group of university students who live near and work at a coffee shop: Julie and Selena, who are a couple and are werewolves, and Chet, who is a centaur. They are sometimes joined by Lindi, and gorgon, and Mark, and vampire, who are part of a band. They later get a new friend named Cass who is a psychic. One day, Selena invites Julie on a date to watch a magic show, and Chet tags along, and the magicians there (a ghost and a fox guy), play a magic trick that makes Chet lose his horse legs and gain human ones. The friends all try to find a way to revert Chet back to normal, obviously with some obstacles along the way.  I guess this was a somewhat cute and magical book, but the truth was, for some reason, it didn't really strike a cord with me. It took me a while to get into the story and understand what was going on, and then ...

THE TEA DRAGON SOCIETY

Image
🎵I am so happy because I finally got around to reading this book!🎵 It took me so long to find this book be available at my local library and when I did see it, I snagged it as quickly as I could.  The Tea Dragon Society by Kay O'Neill is about Greta, a girl who works at her parent's blacksmith shop, but it hasn't been doing so well since the tools that they make are less in demand. One day while walking outside, she rescues a little dragon, which happens to be a tea dragon owned by a family friend named Hesekiel. Tea dragons are special dragons that sprout leaves on their backs that can be used to make all kinds of tea, depending on what herb the dragon grows. When Greta returns the tea dragon to Hesekiel, she meets another girl about her age there who doesn't speak much and has memory loss. Her name is Minette, and she used to be a prophetess in training. Greta and Minette decide to hang out and become friends, and then they both learn more about raising tea dragons...

I also put links to their respective review pages if you want to check those out/revisit them. Just click on the title of the book. I FINALLY READ YOU SHOULD SEE ME IN A CROWN!

Image
Another very favorite contemporary novel! You Should See Me in a Crown by Leah Johnson is a YA contemporary novel about high school senior Liz Lighty, who has a dream of going to the prestigious college Pennington College, being in their orchestra, and then going to medical school. However, she and her family struggle financially and she didn't get the financial aid she applied for. Liz finds out she can get a scholarship and recognition if she becomes prom queen of her high school. The competition is not all fun and games as it is a struggle to get to the top, but Liz also meets someone she has a lot in common with in the process: a girl named Mack. And they start to fall in love with each other... This book was literally everything I love seeing in contemporary romance books. The perfect balance of the emotional moments making you feel things in your chest, and the lighthearted and funny moments making you smile. Leah Johnson is a great writer! I gave it 5 stars. I don't kno...

Radio Silence Review

Image
TW: Mentioning of toxic relations, cyberbullying, underage drinking, and mild discussions of sex Man, I have some really mixed feelings about this one. Radio Silence by Alice Oseman is a YA contemporary book about Frances Janvier. It is her last year of high school and she is aiming to go to Cambridge University. She doesn't seem to care about anything else except being top of the class and Universe City, a podcast series. Frances considers herself a shy geeky girl and doesn't let anyone see the real her at school. As a result, she has a lot of "fake" friends. As in friends who only like her studious side. One day the creator of Universe City reaches out to her on social media and asks her to do official art for the podcast after seeing her fanart of the series on Tumblr. At first she is reluctant, but then she eventually finds out the creator of Universe City is a student at her school, a guy named Aled Last (if you read Heartstopper, this is the same guy!). They ...

CHEER UP LOVE AND POMPOMS REVIEW

Image
Another graphic novel that I really like! I've been seeing this book floating around the bookish spaces I follow, but I didn't pick it up until just recently. But I am glad I finally did, as this book was a delight.  In Cheer Up: Love and Pompoms by Crystal Frasier , Val Wise , and Oscar O. Jupiter , we follow two characters: Annie and Bebe. Annie is very antisocial and would rather study, but her mother encourages her to join the school cheerleading team so she can have something else to do rather than studying and also to have some extracurriculars on her college applications. Anne is also a lesbian. Bebe is on the cheerleading team and is a huge people-pleaser. She is also transgender, and the first trans girl on the cheerleading squad. Annie and Bebe used to be friends, but after Annie joins the cheerleading squad, they rekindle their friendship.  The story is about the girls' and their cheerleading squad improving their cheer skills, gaining popularity, and also lo...

HOW TO BE ACE REVIEW

Image
I wonder if the author of this book and I are long lost twins. They are asexual and autistic just like me, and also likes anime and cartoons.  How to Be Ace by Rebecca Burgess is a graphic novel of the author's experiences finding out they are asexual, and their experience navigating a world that puts heavy emphasis on romantic and sexual relationships. The meat of the narrative is them talking about how they felt lonely very frequently because it was hard for them to get into a serious relationship like a lot of their peers, but then they felt comfortable finding joy in just having friends. One of their friends is named Sophie and is also asexual like them! Other narrative threads include their experience having OCD and the struggle of trying to find a job after graduating during the 2008-2009 Great Recession. They also pause the story several times to explain more about the asexual and aromantic spectrums, as well as debunking myths on aroace people.  I just loved this book...

Nick and Charlie Review

Image
Oh boy...how am I gonna talk about this... Nick and Charlie by Alice Oseman is a novella of the characters Charlie Spring and Nick Nelson whom we all know and love from Heartstopper. This novella is set in Charlie's second to last year of high school and Nick's last year before going to university. The gist is that Charlie worries that he and Nick won't be able to maintain a long-distance relationship, and that's what kicks off the conflict for the story. There is not much to say about this book because it is a novella so the story is short and is everything is resolved pretty quickly. Nick and Charlie have an argument and avoid each other for a while but then they get back together really sweetly towards the end. Pretty predictable.  To be honest, there were a lot of things about this novella I didn't like. I found Charlie in particular to be a lot more short tempered and whinier here compared to his graphic novel counterpart. I also felt very uncomfortable readin...

Given Manga Review (Not for the whole series)

Image
TW: Mentioning of suicide and toxic relationships Pictured above are just the first 6 volumes! As of writing this I have not yet found and read volumes 7 and 8 (there are 8 volumes total), but I will eventually! Fun fact: I watched the anime for Given back in 2018 when it came out, but the anime does not cover the whole story. I decided to read the manga to get the rest of the story, but since it was a while since I watched the anime, I started to read the manga from volume 1. So far me revisiting Given has been wonderful! Given by Natsuki Kizu  is a manga series about a teenage boy named Uenoyama who is part of a new and upcoming band with two college students named Akihiko and Haruki. One day while at school he finds another student named Mafuyu hanging out at his secret location on the stairs, holding a guitar. Mafuyu asks Uenoyama to fix his guitar and teach him how to play. Uenoyama initally finds Mafuyu to be odd and frustrating, but after hearing him sing a song he wrote in ...
