Update on Favorite Books series

Hello! This is a bit of a different post. If you've been on my blog long enough, you might remember a few months ago I started a series called "Favorite Books of All Time" , where I just listed off books that I read and love. I did it every month. There are 6 total parts which you can view here (takes you to the navigation page). Some of you might have noticed that I didn't post one last month. I am not posting one this month, either. In fact, I think I might pause on doing a Favorite Books post for a really long time.  This is because the posts took a long time to make. I would have to sift through my spreadsheets of all the books I have read and rated highly. It was a lot of them. I also tried to share 12 books every time, which also felt like a lot of work to me. I got a lot of other stuff on my plate going on right now. Also, a lot of my favorite books are underrated books that I have already mentioned on my page through my Underrated Books series. So making th...

The Moth Keeper Review

Image
Kay O'Neill is officially a favorite author of mine! Eventually you will see them in my favorite authors series. The Moth Keeper takes place in a world where there is a day village and a night village. The night village has a sacred plant that keeps the village afloat. Our protagonist Anya lives in the night village, and she becomes the keeper of the moths that was gifted by the Night Spirit that help the Night Flower bloom. The moths help pollinate the flower. Being the Moth Keeper is a big responsibility and while she is glad that she is helping so many people, she feels overwhelmed and sometimes lonely. But when things go wrong, Anya's community has her back in more ways than she realized.  I think this book is truly my favorite book from Kay O'Neill so far! It was so magical and so sweet. The characters were awesome and the artwork is gorgeous as usual. There's also queer rep and albinism rep, too! It was a 5 star book for me.

54321 Challenge

I hope I am not too late to this book tag! I actually did this same one way back in 2022 a little after I started my page (you can view that year's edition here ) I saw @spacey_ghost over on Instagram do this back in June of this year, and it rekindled my interest to do it again.  Here are my answers for this year! As usual, anyone is free to do this tag. The questions are a bit different this time. 1. 5 books I love:  Anne of Green Gables by LM Montgomery Just Ella by Margaret Peterson Haddix Kisses and Croissants by Anne-Sophie Johanneau The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon Close Enough to Touch by Colleen Oakley 2. 4 books on my TBR: Tales from Earthsea by Ursula K Le Guin Ella Minnow Pea by Mark Dunn We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson A Psalm for the Wild Built by Becky Chambers 3. 3 books I recommend: Running out of Time by Margaret Peterson Haddix Serafina and the Black Cloak by Robert Beatty Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsen...

Bloomability by Sharon Creech

Image
My new favorite book from Sharon Creech ! Bloomability is about Dinnie, a girl who grew up moving around from state to state in the United States because her father keeps finding a new job frequently. Then one day when she's 13, her aunt and uncle come and take her to stay with them in Switzerland for a a while. That's because Dinnie's uncle became the headmaster of a new international school in the Italian-speaking part of the country, and they want to give Dinnie the opportunity to go there. Dinnie is initally unhappy about this, but as she starts meeting and befriending so many interesting other students at her new school and gets to learn more about Switzerland and the rest of the world, she grows to love the experience. I don't know what else to say about this book because it had all of the magic of a typical Sharon Creech book: a relatable protagonist, a coming of age story, learning the hard way people aren't always what they seem, and difficult topics han...

SWEET BEAN PASTE BY DURIAN SUKEGAWA

Image
OMG.  This is a new all-time favorite! Sweet Bean Paste by Durian Sukegawa is about Sentaro, an ex-convict who is paying off debt he owes by working at a small dorayaki shop. One day an elderly woman named Tokue comes in and notices the "now hiring" sign, and she asks Sentaro if she could work there. Sentaro notices that her fingers are all crooked, too, and he wonders if it's a good idea to hire her. After Tokue has him her try her own sweet bean paste recipe for the dorayaki, Sentaro loves it and hires her. More and more people start to drop by the shop and business is booming. One customer who visits frequently is a teenager named Wakana, who doesn't have a good relationship with her parents but eventually becomes friends with Sentaro and Tokue. Sentaro is happy that the shop is doing well thanks to Tokue, but the owner (his boss) finds out about Tokue and her crooked fingers, and she tells Sentaro she found out that Tokue came from a sanatorium that housed people...

The Magician's Elephant by Kate DiCamillo

Image
My third Kate DiCamillo book (the first two I read were Because of Winn-Dixie and The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane waaaay back when I was elementary school. This one was also great! The Magician's Elephant is about Peter, an orphan living with an elderly soldier named Vilnia Lutz, finds out his little sister Adele is still alive after hearing it from a fortune teller. The fortune teller tells Peter that an elephant will lead him to his sister, but Peter doesn't know where to find this elephant.  Meanwhile, Adele (yes, she's alive!), is living in an orphanage, and she keeps having dreams of an elephant visiting her.   At the same time, a magician is in the city and he performs a magic trick at one of his shows that goes wrong. Instead of summoning a bouquet  of lilies, his accidentally summons an elephant. The elephant lands on a noblewoman named Madama LaVaughn, leaving her paralyzed. The magician is put in jail for destruction of property. The eleph...

Ogress and the Orphans Review

Image
This is the second Kelly Barnhill book I've read so far. The first one I read was The Girl who Drank the Moon back in 2021, which I gave 4 stars to. The Ogress and The Orphans is set in a fantasy world in a small town called Stone-in-the-Glen, which has fallen on hard times ever since the town's library burned down and other buildings such as the school have mysteriously been destroyed, too. Now no one trusts each other and almost nobody ever leaves their homes. The town orphanage has also been struggling financially. The owners and the orphans are very supportive of one another, and they've been trying to get the town to come together again, especially on market days where they sell handmade soap and food from their mini-farm, but to no avail. At the same time on the outskirts of the town, an ancient Ogress has started to live there and she has noticed how the town has been struggling, so every night she secretly leaves food, baked goods, and handmade cards to the people...

The 2nd and 3rd Tea Dragon Books

Image
I can't delve too deep into them since they are the 2nd and 3rd book of the series, but I will tell you right now that I loved them and I gave them both 5 stars! They are just as heartwarming, whimsical, magical, and sweet as the first one, and have both great LGBT and disability rep. I will tell you the 2nd book is a prequel to the first one. And in the third book the characters from both the 1st and 2nd book all come together for a perfect conclusion.  The Tea Dragon Society series is now an all-time favorite graphic novel series for me. It literally had everything I love in fictional storytelling. Thank you Kay O'Neill for your creation!

UNPOPULAR OPINIONS 2.0 TAG

I first saw this tag over at the Youtube channel of Angela from Literature Science Alliance. Check out her video here ! So we all know the OG Unpopular Opinions book tag, but there is also a 2.0 version with even more questions! Here are my answers.  As always, feel free to do this tag if you see it! 1. A genre "great" that you didn't get the hype for. I'm gonna have to say Educated by Tara Westover . For those who don't know, it is a memoir about the author who grew up in an unconventional (and unfortunately toxic) family, and then when she goes to university she learns way more about the world and starts healing from all the emotional scars she got growing up. It sounded like a memoir up my alley, but the thing that made me not like it was I didn't like the way it was written (as in, I didn't like the author's writing style). I actually DNF'd it after chapter 1! The author had a tendency to drone on about details that didn't add much to the...

COSMOKNIGHTS 1 REVIEW

Image
I loved this one! Note: I actually read this back in June, but it was at the very end of June, and I decided to instead include it in my July reads. Either way, it's worth a read! Cosmoknights by Hannah Templar follows a young woman named Pandora (or Pan as she is usually called) who lives on another planet named Viridian somewhere far off in the future. She is secretly friends with the princess of said planet, named Tara. Tara becomes tired of being raised in isolation and asks Pan to help her escape, which she does, but then the rest of the royal family and the planet get angry at Pan for helping Tara escape.  So Pan ends up spending most of her time in her father's repair shop years after that incident. Around that the same time, there are these televised competitive games where different knights from different planets across the galaxy fight to compete for the hand of the princesses of certain planets. Two of the knights are frequent winners, and they're actually a ...

Ruby Holler Review

Image
(Pic was found on Google Images) Yes, another book I read months ago that I couldn't review because of the HarperCollins strike. But here we are now! Ruby Holler by Sharon Creech is about two 13 year old orphans named Dallas and Florida. They've never had a trusted adult in their lives that they felt safe around, because they are usually taken in by a foster family that get sick of them after a while, and then return them to the run-down orphanage they grew up in, run by a mean couple named Mr. and Mrs.  Trepid. Dallas and Florida constantly dream of becoming runaways by sneaking onto the train that sometimes runs through the town. Not far from the small town they live in, there is a farm called Ruby Holler where an elderly couple named Tiller and Sairy live. They decide to go on two separate trips (a canoeing trip for Tiller and a camping trip for Sairy) and also decide to take in Dallas and Florida and invite them on their trips (Florida will go with Tiller, Dallas wil...
