Anime/Manga Poem #12

Image
Today's poem was inspired by the classic shojo anime "The Rose of Versailles". The original manga is by Riyoko Ikeda. In about a week a reboot movie for the series is coming out! The first above is of the ending song of the original anime (from 1979) and the second video is of the trailer of the upcoming reboot movie.  Here's my poem inspired by the series: "There is a revolution On the horizon I feel it in my soul The citizens of France Can’t stand What this monarchy is doing This young king and queen Just engage In frivolous trivial petty matters Spending spending spending Tax money On dresses On jewelry On royal balls Meanwhile The average citizen Doesn’t have enough money For the doctor Or food Or any other basic necessity Oh dear I wonder how all this will be viewed In the future When this part of French history Is recorded And then studied."

My Life in France by Julia Child Review

Image
You have no idea how long I've wanted to read this memoir. I finally got to read it this past month! My Life in France by Julia Child and Alex Prud'homme is Julia Child's memoir. It is her story on how she got into cooking after she and her husband Paul Child moved to Paris, France. They moved there because of Paul's job at the US Embassy there. In her first few years in France, Julia learned to cook all sorts of French dishes and desserts at a world famous cooking school, and she met two of her long-time collaborators there: Simone Beck (nicknamed Simca) and Louisette Betholle. Julia then got the idea of making a cookbook with French recipes, but for an American audience. Aside from talking about her everyday life in France, she also gets into details on how she, Simca, and Louisette wrote there first and most famous cookbook: Mastering the Art of French Cooking . It was not an easy process! But their book became super-successful overseas (in the United States), to ...

The Magician's Elephant by Kate DiCamillo

Image
My third Kate DiCamillo book (the first two I read were Because of Winn-Dixie and The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane waaaay back when I was elementary school. This one was also great! The Magician's Elephant is about Peter, an orphan living with an elderly soldier named Vilnia Lutz, finds out his little sister Adele is still alive after hearing it from a fortune teller. The fortune teller tells Peter that an elephant will lead him to his sister, but Peter doesn't know where to find this elephant.  Meanwhile, Adele (yes, she's alive!), is living in an orphanage, and she keeps having dreams of an elephant visiting her.   At the same time, a magician is in the city and he performs a magic trick at one of his shows that goes wrong. Instead of summoning a bouquet  of lilies, his accidentally summons an elephant. The elephant lands on a noblewoman named Madama LaVaughn, leaving her paralyzed. The magician is put in jail for destruction of property. The eleph...

My Contrary Mary Review

Image
This is the first book of the Mary series. Written by the same authors who wrote the Lady Janies series.  This is a historical fantasy book inspired the the life of Mary, Queen of Scots (our titular Mary) and Francis II (her husband), and other real life historical figures at the time that they worked with or were related to. Mary and Francis are two of our POV characters, still told in third person. There are also some made-up brand new characters related to real historical figures, and one of them is our third POV, Ari. She is the daughter of the famed psychic and apothecary Nostradamus. Ari is not super good at being a psychic, but she is a good apothecary. It takes place in the same world as My Lady Jane , the first book of the Mary series, where everyone is either and Ethian (someone who can turn into an animal) or a Verity (those who cannot turn into animals). The Ethians and the Verities are always in conflicts with each other. In Scotland where our titular Mary is from, a...
