MAY WRAP UP

Isn't it strange how ever since I started this blog I never done monthly wrap ups? It just never occurred to me to do it, but here we go. Here is my first one.  I read a total of 8 books this month. I'm not gonna get into the nitty gritty stats of them. Here there are: One Piece Volume 1. So I finally started my One Piece journey and so far I'm loving it! The very first book gets 5 stars from me. I think it's mainstream knowledge of what this book is about. Boy named Luffy is inspired by pirates in his youth. Hears about the "One Piece" treasure. Luffy wants to find it and become the Pirate King. Also accidentally eats a magical fruit that makes him rubber-like. Traveling and meeting all kinds of people ensues.  Mysteries of Thorn Manor . This is the sequel novella to Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson which I read earlier this year and enjoyed. (Review for Sorcery of Thorns here if you're curious) This was a worthy follow-up too that deepened Elis...

Radio Silence Review

Image
TW: Mentioning of toxic relations, cyberbullying, underage drinking, and mild discussions of sex Man, I have some really mixed feelings about this one. Radio Silence by Alice Oseman is a YA contemporary book about Frances Janvier. It is her last year of high school and she is aiming to go to Cambridge University. She doesn't seem to care about anything else except being top of the class and Universe City, a podcast series. Frances considers herself a shy geeky girl and doesn't let anyone see the real her at school. As a result, she has a lot of "fake" friends. As in friends who only like her studious side. One day the creator of Universe City reaches out to her on social media and asks her to do official art for the podcast after seeing her fanart of the series on Tumblr. At first she is reluctant, but then she eventually finds out the creator of Universe City is a student at her school, a guy named Aled Last (if you read Heartstopper, this is the same guy!). They ...

Nick and Charlie Review

Image
Oh boy...how am I gonna talk about this... Nick and Charlie by Alice Oseman is a novella of the characters Charlie Spring and Nick Nelson whom we all know and love from Heartstopper. This novella is set in Charlie's second to last year of high school and Nick's last year before going to university. The gist is that Charlie worries that he and Nick won't be able to maintain a long-distance relationship, and that's what kicks off the conflict for the story. There is not much to say about this book because it is a novella so the story is short and is everything is resolved pretty quickly. Nick and Charlie have an argument and avoid each other for a while but then they get back together really sweetly towards the end. Pretty predictable.  To be honest, there were a lot of things about this novella I didn't like. I found Charlie in particular to be a lot more short tempered and whinier here compared to his graphic novel counterpart. I also felt very uncomfortable readin...

I CAUGHT UP WITH HEARTSTOPPER!

Image
But I can't do a full review because it's book four. I will let you know it's just as beautiful as the previous three. 5 stars from me! I love how groundbreaking the mental health representation is in this specific volume.  I can't wait for volume 5! I will also be checking out the Heartstopper Yearbook and everything else Alice Oseman has to offer us in Nick and Charlie's world. You can check it all out at her website here (also comes with trigger warnings for all of her books!).  I'm really passionate about Alice Oseman's works. Is there an author you're really passionate about too?

AN UPDATE ON HOW I WILL REVIEW THE REST OF HEARTSTOPPER

Image
So here's the thing: I have been reading the Heartstopper graphic novel series by Alice Oseman and I have been absolutely loving them! But I realize I can't talk about the rest of the series without getting into actual spoilers, so I've decided to make this review post very unorthodox and tell you what you will find in volumes 2 and 3 as vaguely as possible. You will find: Characters deepening their relationships Characters understanding themselves better More character backstories Friendship struggles A birthday party at a bowling alley Standing up to bullies A class trip to Paris, France A lot and a lot of communication...and healing Noticed how I didn't specify any character names. That's for you to find out! Feel free to discuss volumes 2 and 3 in the comments with me if you read them already.  Also, although I didn't get into detail here, there are MASSIVE trigger warnings for these two books which include: forced outing, homophobia, biphobia, bullying, ...

I FINALLY READ THE FIRST VOLUME OF HEARTSTOPPER BY ALICE OSEMAN

Image
TW: Mention of a toxic relationship and a non-consensual kiss This graphic novel is more proof Alice Oseman is one of my favorite authors ever! The first novel of this webcomic-turned graphic novel series Heartstopper is about a teenage boy named Charlie who is rather unpopular at his school. Charlie is also openly gay, and in the beginning is actively trying to get out of a toxic relationship with another guy named Ben. When the new school year starts, Charlie gets a seat next to a popular guy named Nick in one of his classes. Nick is very friendly to Charlie, and they start to hang out and form a close friendship with each other. They become even better friends after Charlie stands up for himself towards Ben and Nick tells Ben to stay away from Charlie or else. Charlie finds himself slowly falling in love with Nick, but he is not sure if Nick will also like him back the same way. At the same time, Nick is questioning his own romantic orientation. This was such a sweet book! A...

I FINALLY READ LOVELESS BY ALICE OSEMAN!

Image
Well I haven't updated this blog in a while, but that was because I was trying to find the best way to describe my experience with reading Loveless by Alice Oseman.  This story is about a college freshman named Georgia Warr, who despite loving things like romance novels and romance movies, she has never had a crush on anyone and has never dated anyone, let alone kissed someone. She feels as if she's missing out on life, especially when everyone her age, including her own two friends Pip (real named Felipa) and Jason, has already gone on so many dates.  With the help of her new friend and roommate Rooney, Georgia tries experimenting with whom she could possibly like. So she first tries to date a guy. She starts with her friend Jason (which fails drastically), and then she thinks she might like girls, so she and Rooney kiss, but she ends up upsetting her friend Pip, who already had a crush on Rooney.  After a conversation about aromanticism and asexuality with her c...
