A Close and Common Orbit

Image
I read A Long Way to a Small Angry Planet way back in 2022 and I loved it! The review for it is here in case you missed it. I initially said I wouldn't continue with the rest of the series, but with many people telling me the rest of the books were worth it, I changed my mind. So here's my review for book two. In A Close and Common Orbit by Becky Chambers , we follow Pepper, whom we met in book 1 and Sidra, an AI formally known as Lovelace whose programming is now installed a human-like body, referred to as a kit. Lovelace was the AI of the Wayfarer, the ship and its crew we followed in book 1. The book is told in two timelines. The current timeline is about Sidra getting used to her new body and her daily life with Pepper, Pepper's best friend and business partner Blue, and a new friend named Tak, while trying to steer clear of government officials since humanoids with AI in them are illegal. The second timeline is a bunch of flashbacks of Pepper's life before whe...

Everything Leads to You Review

Image
I think Nina Lacour is becoming a new favorite author of mine! I don't know why it took me so long to read another book from her, because her writing is awesome. The first Nina Lacour book I read was We Are Okay back in 2022. You can read the review here . Everything Leads to You by Nina Lacour is about Emi, an 18 year old young woman who got a summer internship in movie set designing thanks to her older brother Toby. One day she and her best friend Charlotte are invited to look through the estate of a really famous movie star that just died, named Clyde Jones. While looking though there to see what they can use for the set of an upcoming movie, they come across a record player with a hidden letter inside. In the letter, they learned that Clyde Jones actually left some money for his daughter Caroline to inherit. The girls find out that Caroline died a long time ago, but she had a daughter named Ava who is still alive and is around their age. After several roadblocks, they reac...

SWEET BEAN PASTE BY DURIAN SUKEGAWA

Image
OMG.  This is a new all-time favorite! Sweet Bean Paste by Durian Sukegawa is about Sentaro, an ex-convict who is paying off debt he owes by working at a small dorayaki shop. One day an elderly woman named Tokue comes in and notices the "now hiring" sign, and she asks Sentaro if she could work there. Sentaro notices that her fingers are all crooked, too, and he wonders if it's a good idea to hire her. After Tokue has him her try her own sweet bean paste recipe for the dorayaki, Sentaro loves it and hires her. More and more people start to drop by the shop and business is booming. One customer who visits frequently is a teenager named Wakana, who doesn't have a good relationship with her parents but eventually becomes friends with Sentaro and Tokue. Sentaro is happy that the shop is doing well thanks to Tokue, but the owner (his boss) finds out about Tokue and her crooked fingers, and she tells Sentaro she found out that Tokue came from a sanatorium that housed people...

Ogress and the Orphans Review

Image
This is the second Kelly Barnhill book I've read so far. The first one I read was The Girl who Drank the Moon back in 2021, which I gave 4 stars to. The Ogress and The Orphans is set in a fantasy world in a small town called Stone-in-the-Glen, which has fallen on hard times ever since the town's library burned down and other buildings such as the school have mysteriously been destroyed, too. Now no one trusts each other and almost nobody ever leaves their homes. The town orphanage has also been struggling financially. The owners and the orphans are very supportive of one another, and they've been trying to get the town to come together again, especially on market days where they sell handmade soap and food from their mini-farm, but to no avail. At the same time on the outskirts of the town, an ancient Ogress has started to live there and she has noticed how the town has been struggling, so every night she secretly leaves food, baked goods, and handmade cards to the people...

I'VE STARTED READING SPYXFAMILY!!!

Image
I unfortunately can't watch the anime right now because I don't have a subscription to Crunchyroll. But reading the manga is equally a fun experience! Spy x Family by Tatsuya Endo takes place in a location that seems to be inspired by Germany during the Cold War in real life. This fictional country is divided in two: Westalis and Ostania. Our MC is a spy with the codename Twilight and is from Westalis. He is tasked with a mission to get information from a shady government official from Ostania named Donovan Desmond, who only makes public appearances at his son's elite school. Twilight has to carry out the mission by adopting a kid, getting married to some woman, enrolling the kid into the academy, and pretending to be a parent in order to get information on Donovan. Twilight adopts the name Loid and adopts a telepathic girl from an orphanage named Anya. Anya immediately becomes attached to Loid, which is really cute to watch. Like all kids, she is a handful, but also real...
