Pat of Silver Bush Review

Image
(Pic was found on Google Images) Another underrated book by LM Montgomery ! This was actually my second attempt at this book, and I am so glad I gave it another chance because this time, I listened to the whole thing on audiobook and I liked it!  Pat of Silver Bush follows Pat Gardiner, who lives in a quaint little house called Silver Bush on Prince Edward Island with her family and nanny named Judy. Pat does not like change, and she gets very overwhelmed whenever something new comes to Silver Bush, or when something leaves. But she soon learns that change is what makes life so interesting. Thanks to changes she is able to experience so much. From loving her new little sister Rachel (nicknamed Cuddles), making two new best friend named Hilary (nicknamed Jingle) and Elizabeth (nicknamed Bets), trying new fashion styles and hairstyles, seeing her older siblings be happy when they get married, or simply immersing herself the magic of nature and her imagination.  It's such...

Mamo Review

Image
Mamo by Sas Milledge follows Joanna, or Jo for short, whose mother has fallen ill. Other mishaps are happening in her small community, too. Jo wonders if it's all because of the fae (fairies) and humans making them angry. She enlists the help of the village witch named Orla. Though somewhat stubborn and reclusive, Orla helps out Jo when they find the root cause of the problem. It turns out Orla's deceased grandmother, the previous village witch named Mamo, is causing the problem with her bones and soul scattered about. Jo helps Orla by learning some magic to stop Mamo, and she finds out some things about Orla and Mamo that changes everything she knew about them.  This book was so cool because it talked about witchcraft and fairies in a way that closely mirrors real-world beliefs. Magic isn't the glittery stuff you see on TV, and the fairies here are actually really scary.  Unfortunately, I wasn't really of fan of Jo and Orla's relationship. They spend most of the...

Favorite Authors Part 1: LM Montgomery

A new series where I talk and gush about authors whom I've read a lot from and love! The first Lucy Maud Montgomery book I read and loved was Anne of Green Gables , back when I was in middle school. It wasn't until my college years I found out there were more Anne books and she's written other books not about Anne during her lifetime.  I read the first two Anne sequels ( Anne of Avonlea and Anne of the Island ) and enjoyed them both! I can't say the same for Anne of Windy Poplars , the 4th book. I DNF it.  I found out on TV Tropes (link here , look at "Creator Backlash") that LM Montgomery didn't actually like writing most of the sequels of Anne of Green Gables . She put so many sequels out because the public and her publisher kept demanding it. Believe it or not, Anne of Windy Poplars was actually the 7th book published. It's like the Narnia series by CS Lewis  where the books were published out of order. So Windy Poplars is the 4th book in the ser...

I Started Reading the Call the Name of the Night manga series!

Image
I hope this becomes a new favorite series! Call the Name of the Night by Tama Mitsuboshi is about Mira--a girl with a rare condition where everytime she gets anxious, everything around her gets engulfed in darkness and it scares people. She is currently living with a doctor and magician named Rei, who is researching her rare condition and will maybe find a cure for it. Mira's daily life with Rei is rather chill: she usually reads books, helps Rei with cooking, plays with little shadow creatures,  and hangs out in the garden.  One day, an old, rather sketchy acquaintance of Rei's names Cartos comes to visit, and Mira ends up learning something about herself she never knew.  So far, I am loving this!  I gave this first volume 5 stars .  I love the heartwarming magical cottagecore vibes and the gorgeous pictures. it's like a more chill version of Witch Hat Atelier, in my opinion.  I also love the dynamic between Mira and Rei! I have a feeling Cartos wi...

Unfamiliar Volume 2 Brief Review

Image
Yeah, I just talked about the first book a few days ago, but I got to talk about the sequel! Something I rarely ever do, but that's because this sequel blew my mind! Unfamiliar Volume 2 by Haley Newsome is the sequel to Unfamiliar Volume 1 . In this sequel, it is a lot more story driven, a lot more darker, and a lot more serious. There's more character development, and twists about some characters we've met in previous volumes. While out witchy girls continue dealing with mishaps mostly involving ghosts, two of our characters fall in love (yup, a Sapphic romance! 😃). But overall, it still has the same cozy vibes just like the first book. A pure 5 star book ! I hope I convinced you to put these books on your TBR if you haven't already. I'd seriously love to read anything else this author puts out! I've also started watching her YouTube channel. 😉

The Penderwicks Review

Image
Have you ever had expectations for a book that were... just a little too high? Fun fact: I originally DNF'd (did not finish) this book a few years ago, but I decided to give it a second chance. Was it good the second time around? Well... The Penderwicks by Jeanne Birdsall is a middle-grade novel about four sisters (oldest to youngest): Rosaline, Jane, Skye, and Batty, and their father, spending the summer in a cottage that is part of the grounds of a huge mansion. They become friends with the landlord's son, named Jeffery. They love each other's company, but Jeffery's mom thinks that the Penderwick sisters are a bad influence on him, and she has other plans for her son that he doesn't like. Along with their adventures with playing in nature, and playing with the pet rabbits of the groundskeeper named Cagney, the Penderwicks try to help Jeffery deal with his overbearing mother. This sounded like something right up my alley, and I enjoyed it for the most part, but ...

The Sprite and the Gardener Review

Image
This book was sooo sweet and sooo cute! The Sprite and the Gardener by Rii Abrego and Joe Whitt takes place in our world--with some magic! Sprites have lived for centuries helping all kinds of plants grow with their magic. Until humans came along and started doing gardening themselves. The sprites are still around but they help less and less. One little sprite named Wisteria secretly discovers a human girl named Elena who takes care of her mother's flower garden, as her mother is out working all day. Wisteria decides to secretly help Elena's garden grow, as long as she isn't discovered.  If you couldn't already tell, Wisteria does get discovered by Elena. And everything changes from there.  What a magical book! I love the whimsical illustrations, and I loved what a chill, slice-of-life cottagecore book this was.  It is a pure 5 star book . I want to read more from this author and illustrator. What was the last "chill" book you read?

The Story Girl Review

Image
(Pic was found on Google Images) Another underrated and great book by LM Montgomery ! The Story Girl is about two brothers, Beverly and Felix King, who go to visit their cousins (named Felicity, Cecily, and Dan King) in Prince Edward Island for the summer, and part of the fall. The book in general is slice of life with no overarching plot, and it follows the situations, ranging from serious to comical, of the King cousins and some other friends. The family friends include Sarah Ray, a neighbor, and Peter, a hired boy for one of the wealthy families in the area, but the family friend that stands out the most is neighbor Sarah Stanley, or The Story Girl, which is what everyone calls her, because she loves to tell all kinds of stories. It’s also not to confuse her with Sarah Ray. The Story Girl likes to tell stories that have happened to people they know in their community, or stories she makes up herself, or even fairy tales and mythology. Almost every chapter of the book has Th...

JANE OF LANTERN HILL REVIEW

Image
(Pic was found on Google Images) Yup, another massively underrated book by LM Montgomery . I listened to it on audiobook this past month.  Jane of Lantern Hill is about Jane Stuart, who lives with her mother and grandmother in a mansion in Toronto. Jane does not have the best life there--her grandmother rules the place with an iron fist and is always being condescending towards Jane. Whenever Jane's other relatives visit, they are not kind to her either. Jane also gets bullied a lot at her school. Only Jane's mother and Jane's next door neighbor and friend Jody are kind to her--but Jane doesn't get to see them every single day (mother likes to go out to parties and hang out with friends, and Jody works as a maid at the boarding house she stays at and the landlady doesn't let her see Jane everyday). The main reason Jane's grandmother isn't kind to her was because she didn't approve of the marriage between her mother and father, so she despises Jane for ...

Mandy by Julie Andrews Spoiler-Free Review

Image
I just finished reading Mandy by Julie Andrews. (Yes, that Julie Andrews. Did you know she was an author as well as an actress?) I gave this book 5 out of 5 stars. This was such a sweet book! This gave off the same heartwarming, cottagecore vibes similar to Anne of Green Gables, which is one of my favorite books of all time.  Mandy is about an orphan girl named, well, Mandy, who is ten years old and has lived in an orphanage all of her life. Despite her relatively normal an non-chaotic life in the orphanage, she's had a lingering sadness in the back of her mind because she always felt that something was missing from her life.  One day while exploring the woods behind the orphanage, she comes across an old abandoned cottage. She decides to make it her own personal sanctuary. So she starts a project to tidy up the cottage and grow a garden there, but she has to keep it secret, as she has felt she finally found a place to call her own and doesn't want to share it with any...
