Alice in Kyoto Forest Volume 1 Review

Image
It's been a while since I used my dolls for a book picture! I knew Bunny Blanche and Madeline Hatter from Every After High would be perfect for this. Alice in Kyoto Forest by Mai Mochizuki and Haruki Niwa is about Alice Shirakawa, a 15 year old orphan who loves books and lives with her aunt and uncle. However, her uncle wants nothing to do with her, and so Alice decides she should move out and find a job to support herself. She finds an advertisement to be an apprentice to a geisha (called a maiko) in Kyoto, where she was originally from. But when she moves back to Kyoto, it isn't the Kyoto she remembered! It looks historical... and magical. Alice tries to figure out the mystery of this new world she was whisked away to, her true purpose there, and reunite with her childhood friend, Ren.  So far I love this story! It's very obviously inspired by Alice in Wonderland. Overall, it also reminded me of some Studio Ghibli movies, most notably Spirited Away, Howl's Moving C...

French Girl in New York Review

Image
Oh, this one was just lovely! A French Girl in New York by Anna Adams is about Maude, a 16 year old who lives in Carvin, a small town in the north of France with her foster family, who act coldly towards her and refuse to talk to her about her birth parents. Maude also loves to sing and play piano, but unlike most people her age, she prefers opera and classical music. One day during a school field trip in Paris, she comes across an American social media influencer named Chad, and he invites her to perform inside. Maude sings a cover of a popular pop song, and to her surprise, Chad records the whole thing, and it ends up going viral. The next thing Maude knows, a record label president named Terence and his adult daughter Cynthia show up at her house and want to turn her into a pop star! Maude then finds herself in New York City learning the ins and outs of the music business. She also starts falling in love with two guys at once. One named Matt who is her music partner, and anot...

Bookshops and Bonedust Review

Image
It's been a while since I visited the wonderful world Travis Baldree created with Legends and Lattes ! (You can read the review for that book here .) It's also been a while since I took a picture of a book with one of my dolls. That's Venus McFlytrap from G3 Monster High. Bookshops and Bonedust is the prequel to Legends and Lattes . This prequel follows Viv the Orc recovering from an injury from her last battle. She spends time in this seaside town called Murk, where she becomes friendly with a colorful cast of new friends, from a restaurant owner named Brand, to a gnome named Gallina, to a carpenter named Pitts, and even her surgeon named Highlark. She also becomes enemies with a guard named Iridia, but even she becomes more of a frenemy later on. However, Viv spends most of her time at a nearby bookshop and the bakery next door to it. She becomes super close with the rattkin that owns the bookshop, named Fern, and her pet griffet Potroast (they're pictured on the c...

The Legend of Shadow High Review

Image
Do you like Monster High, Ever After High, or both?  Either way, Here's a crossover book between my two of my favorite doll franchises! Was this story good? Well... The Legend of Shadow High by Shannon Hale and Dean Hale starts off with Frankie Stein and Draculaura from Monster High who hear rumors about a high school monsters historically went to called Shadow High. They find a map and try out some spells to take them to this  Shadow High, but they end up in Ever After High instead! When their sudden appearance causes chaos and gets them in trouble, they are taken under the wings of Apple White and Raven Queen, and they become friends. Well, the new friends find out that Raven's mother, the Evil Queen, wants to also get to Shadow High and take over the World of Stories. The World of Stories happens to be the world where all fictional characters (monsters and fairy tale characters mostly) live, separate from our world by the Fourth Wall (get it?). They have to stop the...

Unfamiliar Volume 2 Brief Review

Image
Yeah, I just talked about the first book a few days ago, but I got to talk about the sequel! Something I rarely ever do, but that's because this sequel blew my mind! Unfamiliar Volume 2 by Haley Newsome is the sequel to Unfamiliar Volume 1 . In this sequel, it is a lot more story driven, a lot more darker, and a lot more serious. There's more character development, and twists about some characters we've met in previous volumes. While out witchy girls continue dealing with mishaps mostly involving ghosts, two of our characters fall in love (yup, a Sapphic romance! 😃). But overall, it still has the same cozy vibes just like the first book. A pure 5 star book ! I hope I convinced you to put these books on your TBR if you haven't already. I'd seriously love to read anything else this author puts out! I've also started watching her YouTube channel. 😉

Unfamiliar Volume 1 Review

Image
In the mood for a cute, chill, and funny graphic novel with witches in it? Check this out! Unfamiliar by Haley Newsome is a slice-of-life, high fantasy graphic novel following a group of friends who are witches: Planchette (on the cover) is a friendly kitchen witch, Pinyon, a witch who calls herself the "worst witch" in town, Babs, a shy witch who is part siren (type of mermaid), and Sun, a witch with a curse who also works multiple jobs and is frequently grumpy. Most of their adventures usually involve Planchette's new house, which is haunted with ghosts who will only leave if they finally have the one thing they always wanted while they were still alive.  I loved the interactions between the characters, and I loved all the magic, too! I think my favorite thing about this book were the illustrations.  So it is a 5 star book from me. I can't wait to find and read the next volume!

The Magician's Elephant by Kate DiCamillo

Image
My third Kate DiCamillo book (the first two I read were Because of Winn-Dixie and The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane waaaay back when I was elementary school. This one was also great! The Magician's Elephant is about Peter, an orphan living with an elderly soldier named Vilnia Lutz, finds out his little sister Adele is still alive after hearing it from a fortune teller. The fortune teller tells Peter that an elephant will lead him to his sister, but Peter doesn't know where to find this elephant.  Meanwhile, Adele (yes, she's alive!), is living in an orphanage, and she keeps having dreams of an elephant visiting her.   At the same time, a magician is in the city and he performs a magic trick at one of his shows that goes wrong. Instead of summoning a bouquet  of lilies, his accidentally summons an elephant. The elephant lands on a noblewoman named Madama LaVaughn, leaving her paralyzed. The magician is put in jail for destruction of property. The eleph...

CREEPY CAT VOLUME 1

Image
So I picked up this graphic novel on a whim at the library a few days ago because I needed something smaller to read as I am reading three bigger books. Well, this was fun! Creepy Cat by Cotton Valent is a slice of life gothic graphic novel of a goth girl named Flora who moves into a gothic mansion she inherited from a family member of hers, and discovers the place is "haunted" by some cat-looking creature who can shapeshift, multiply itself, and do other odd things. Flora is very excited to have this cat, but he sometimes makes her life difficult, and sometimes the police gets involve. The policeman who visits her house frequently is named Oscar, and Flora eventually befriends him, too. Flora and Oscar then try to figure out what this cat like creature is and why he behaves so strange while going about their daily lives.  I know it sounds like there is an overarching plot, but for the most part, there isn't really a cohesive plot. It's largely just slice-of-life, ...

AMBER BROWN IS NOT A CRAYON SPOILER FREE REVIEW

Image
Fun fact: I actually read some of the Amber Brown books as a kid, but I didn't remember too much about them afterward. That's why I am planning on reading all of them as an adult. And it was worth it! Amber Brown is Not a Crayon is the first of the many books of the Amber Brown series written initially by Paula Dazinger and later continued by Elizabeth Levy and Bruce Coville. This book follows third grader Amber Brown dealing with the fact the her best friend since preschool, Justin Daniels, is moving away to Alabama. Amber doesn't like sudden change, and she already feels she is dealing with too much with having no other friends in the class and her parents' recent divorce. She at first tries to hang out and joke around with Justin likes she usually does, but it doesn't last for long as she thinks he looks excited to be moving away. Then after a little fight she decides to stop talking to him but then feels even more sad. Eventually, she learns that change is a...

LAZINESS DOES NOT EXIST Spoiler Free Review

Image
Laziness Does Not Exist by Devon Price is a nonfiction informational self help book on rethinking the way we get motivated, do work, do things, and get rest.  Dr. Devon Price talks about how American culture in particular has become so obsessed with us doing work or anything at all to the point of breaking because we often times do not want to be seen as "lazy". Well, it turns out laziness is a lit in it of itself, and they use every chapter of this book to deconstruct the myth of laziness, from it's roots in religion to capitalism to racism, classism, sexism, and especially ableism. Throughout the book Dr. Price weaves several studies and anecdotes on stories of people they've interviewed to their own personal life stories on how overworking is not good for our health in the long run and what can we do to recognize our own biases, listen to our gut feelings, and take more breaks.  This book is pretty much in the similar vein as Do Nothing by Celeste Headlee (a bo...

WITCH HAT ATELIER VOLUME 1 SPOILER FREE REVIEW!

Image
I've seen this manga floating around the Internet for a while, but I've only picked it up now. It is so worth the read! Witch Hat Atelier by Kamome Shirahama is a high fantasy series about a girl named Coco who is interested in magic. She is told she can't do magic because she was not born a witch, but she believes with the right tools and skills, she can become one. One day Coco plays around with a magical book and pen she got from a mysterious witch she met in a marketplace years ago, and she accidentally ruins her house and turns her mother into stone.  Master Qifrey, a man she met a few days earlier at her family's artisan shop, turns out to be a witch himself, and he takes Coco under his wing after seeing the damage she's done. She then starts studying magic at his atelier along with three other girls, and starts learning magic and other important life lessons along the way, and she hopes one day to return home and save her mother. If this sounds like a whim...

CAKE POP CRUSH SPOILER FREE REVIEW

Image
Cake Pop Crush by Suzanne Nelson is a middle grade book that I bought back in middle school at a Scholastic Book Fair in 2012, when I was in middle school. That was 10 years ago! Only now did I decided to start reading it. And boy, was it a great idea! I'm glad I never gave the book away. Cake Pop Crush is about a girl named Alicia Ramirez whose family owns a small, old-fashioned bakery called Say it with Flour. Out of all the bakery items you can think of, Ali likes to bake cake pops, inspired heavily by her favorite celebrity baker, Renata DaLuca. Her family's bakery Say it with Flour has fallen under hard times recently, but they get even more competition when a popular coffee chain opens across the street from them, called Perk Up. Ali and her friends and family have to think up creative ways to save the business from falling under, usually involving Ali selling her cake pops. At the same time, Ali butts heads with the son of the owner/CEO of Perk Up, named Dane. But as ...

I FINALLY READ ESCAPE FROM MR. LEMONCELLO'S LIBRARY

Image
For some reason, it took me a really long time to read this book. The first time I tried reading it was way back in high school, and I only got halfway through it and I got caught up reading other stuff. Then I tried reading it again in August this year and, if you've been keeping up with me, I got caught up reading other things. I finally read the whole thing a few days ago. It was totally worth it!  Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library by Chris Grabenstein is about a boy named Kyle who loves to play games from the quirky businessman, Mr. Lemoncello. After submitting an essay at the last minute for a writing competition, Kyle and several of his classmates in his English class at school get to stay overnight at Mr. Lemoncello's new library in their hometown before it officially opens to the public! But it's not any normal overnight stay, because Mr. Lemoncello and the librarian, Dr. Zichenko, turn the library into one big escape room. Kyle and his friends have to wor...

I READ THE VERY FIRST NANCY DREW BOOK EVER

Image
I just read the very first Nancy Drew novel ever: The Secret of the Old Clock. I've known about Nancy Drew by Carolyn Keene for a very long time, I just didn't read one until now.  Apparently there are over 500 Nancy Drew books published in the last several decades. I'm probably only going to read the original series. Luckily the books are really short and largely episodic. So you don't actually have to read them in order. I just started with the first one. I'm glad to report that I enjoyed it!  Of course, keeping it spoiler free, in this book we are introduced to 18-year old Nancy Drew solving her very first case ever. She takes on after her father, who is a lawyer, and gets a lot of his help throughout her adventure. Nancy is trying to uncover the mystery behind a supposed second will that an eccentric rich man in her community named Josiah Crowley left behind to his relatives and some friends of his. For some reason, the only known will that Crowley wrote befo...
