  Well, actually the anniversary was a few days ago (August 1st), but I had some things I needed to take care of, so we celebrate today. I thought I'd combine it with this trend that has been going around of "Meet Me in 5s". Here is mine!  

  Kind of a spiritual successor to My Favorite Anime Series (you can look at this page and that list under the Navigation Page above).   

Omg this might be my favorite One Piece spinoff novel so far! One Piece: Law's Story by Eichiro Oda and Shusei Sakagami is the story of the character Trafalgar D. Water Law on how he met his closest crew members (Bepo, Shachi, and Penguin) and formed the Heart Pirates. He learns a lot about doctoring and martial arts, but especially life, love, and kindness from his new guardian, an eccentric elderly scientist named Wolf.  I can't get too into it because you'd have to be very familiar with One Piece to understand it, but let's just say this book warmed my heart so much! It's very emotional and well written, and it definitely made me love Law even more as a character. I am so glad we get books like these to get to know certain characters in the world of One Piece more. That's because in the main storyline, we only get bits and pieces of other characters backstories, but books like these put it all together.  So yeah, I gave it 5 stars . It's a must read f...

Today we will start with sharing my unpopular opinions for 2025.  Here are my answers from the last several years: 2022 , 2023 , and 2024 . As usual, feel free to do this tag, too! 1.  A popular book or series you didn't like.  I actually DNF'd this book back in June. It was She Drives Me Crazy by Kelly Quindlen . I found the MC Scottie to be really unlikable, and I also found her relationship with the other girl Irene to be pretty toxic.  2.  A book/series a lot of people don't like, but you liked.  Maybe Funny Story by Emily Henry ? Henry's books in general are pretty divided. Funny Story is my favorite book from her so far! 3.  A love triangle where the main character ended up with the person didn’t want them to end up with/an OTP that you don’t like.   As a One Piece fan, I had to pick these up. This is not going to be like my typical reviews since there isn't much to say about these two books. I also can't get too into them because I know not everyone here has read or watched One Piece. Wanted! is just a compilation of random comic stories that creator Eichiro Oda wrote before he officially started One Piece. The last comic, Romance Dawn, is basically a rough draft for One Piece! i gave it 4 stars . One Piece Heroines Volume 1 is a light novel of stand alone stories set in the world of One Piece following four of the female characters: Nami, Robin, Vivi, and Perona. They are pretty lighthearted, so they're great for reading if you want a break from the intensity of the main One Piece storyline.  Or if you're in the mood for something more chill. I gave it 5 stars .

One Piece This is pretty obvious if you know me in real life. 😜 I don't need to explain what it is about since it's one of the best selling manga series of all time. Pretty much everyone knows what it's about. 2. Skip Beat! A young woman named Kyoko follows her childhood friend Shu to the big city where he's become a star! Unfortunately, she finds out he was using her the whole time to boost his own career. Feeling hurt, she decides to get revenge on him by competing in show business as an actress. Along the way, Kyoko meets new friends, including one mysterious guy named Ren. She learns to start doing things for herself instead of trying to please others.   Well, did you know this movie is based off a book by Eiko Kadono ? Or have you ever read the book after watching the movie version? The book follows the similar premise of a 13 year old witch named Kiki who comes from a long line of witches. She also leaves on a full moon night with her talking black cat Jiji to a city by the sea, stays with a baker named Osono and her husband, and also runs a delivery service.  Other similarities include Kiki meeting an aviation-loving boy named Tombo, becoming friends with an artist lady who lives in the woods, making a delivery for an elderly woman, and becoming popular in her community.  The similarities end there. There are many things the book has that were not in the movie, or were changed for the movie.  For one, book Kiki has waaay more deliveries. There is one delivery at least every chapter after she arrives in the city. Some smaller ones are not even explained in great detail. In the movie, I think she only had 3 or 4 ...

I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed this! The first volume of Magical Boy by The Kao is about Max--a trans guy who is descended from a line of magical warriors who have to protect the earth from these giant bug monsters who feed off of peoples' negative feelings. The magical warriors of his family got their powers from the goddess Aurora. Max doesn't like this new magical warrior responsibility at first, as his outfit looks really feminine, and his mother (the previous magical warrior) expects him to do his magical duties the traditional way. That includes "acting" really feminine, something Max is obviously uncomfortable with. But with the help of his friend Jen, a new friend named Sean, and an enemy turned friend named Pyper, Max begins to do things his own way. They work together to try to stop the bug monsters from destroying the Earth. His magical outfit also looks less feminine over time.  This book was a blast! I loved this take on a magical warrior...

Hey look! Another all time favorite! And that bookmark that matches the book was signed by the author herself.  The Last Cherry Blossom by Kathleen Burkinshaw is a historical fiction book about Yuriko Ishikawa, a 12-year old girl living in Hiroshima, Japan during WW2. The story follows her daily life and other surprises before the city gets bombed, and the aftermath of said bombing. A lot of the "daily life" stuff in this book mostly centers around Yuriko and her family. She grew up living with her single father, and then one day her single aunt Kimiko and cousin Genji start living with them, shaking up the house dynamic, which Yuriko doesn't like. She also doesn't get along with with aunt Kimiko and Genji. Yuriko's father also starts dating another woman named Sumiyo. Aunt Kimiko also starts dating a guy named Akira. The adults then get engaged and have a double wedding. Luckily, Yuriko gets along well with her new stepmom and step-uncle.  Yuriko is also not pop...

  Another blog post that is just a list, but worth checking out. Here are some of my favorite anime/manga series. Some of these might be your favorites too, or maybe these are good recommendations if you are thinking of getting into anime and manga. 1. Fruits Basket This is about the 2019-2021 reboot, which covers the whole story. The original manga was written by Natsuki Takaya in the late 90s and early 2000s. Fruits Basket is about a teenage girl named Tohru Honda who has recently been orphaned, and finds herself beginning to live with the Sohma clan. She finds out that for generations, several members of their clan have been cursed with the spirits of the animals of the Chinese Zodiac, and they many of them have had difficult lives growing up so they all carry a lot of trauma with them. When Tohru comes along, their lives start to turn around for the better, and even Tohru herself carries a lot of baggage that she slowly learns to how to handle thanks to her new family.  Th...

  T alli: Daughter of the Moon is the first book of an currently ongoing graphic novel series inspired by Japanese manga written and illustrated by French-Laotian author Sourya Sihachakr, and originally published in French. His Instagram is @_sulhya_ . This is a high fantasy story taking place in a medieval European-inspired fantasy setting where the MC, Talli, is torn away from her home and her adoptive father, Lord Borin, after an attack lead by Lord Ulric, who wants to capture Talli. Escaping with her bodyguard Alan, they are trying to get to a place called Blue Whale Port and find a woman named Dame Sybelle who can help them. Along the way, the form a bond with a merchant named Pavel and his grandson Lelo, who is a sword user. Another character named captain Nina is also on the group's heels because she knows about Talli's secret: Talli is a descendant of the moon goddess, and she has divine powers. There are still people in their world that worship and follow the goddess...

Did you know I also like to read manga?  Well, to be honest, I watch more anime than read manga. The last manga series I remember reading in it's entirety was Kitchen Princess back in middle school , which was more than a decade ago. For the last decade or so of my life I've only consumed manga-original stories through their anime adaptations. Sometimes the anime adaptations don't even cover the entire manga. They're more like advertisements to get you to go buy the manga (clever marketing, huh?) Additionally, there are probably hundreds of manga out there that have no anime adaptation attached to it. Go figure.  But I've decided to start reading actual manga again, and last week I finished the very first volume of  My Love Mix -Up by Wataru Hinekure.   In American marketing terms, this a YA contemporary romance manga series about three teenage friends (two guys and a girl, in this order): Aoki, Ida, and Hashimoto.   Aside from being a marketer, reader, and aspiring author, I am also an artist! I am not a professional though. I've always loved drawing and painting. Mostly drawing though. Especially drawing cartoons and anime. Sometimes I do draw and paint more realistic stuff. Such as the painting above.  I painted this butterfly back in summer of 2019 when I was at a watercolor workshop class led by Ryan Fox, an artist who is local to my area. He's a really cool guy, and you can check out his website here  . I learned at lot of watercolor techniques there, such as letting different colors run and blend together naturally, and watercolor blooms. Ryan brought a lot of pictures for us to trace and paint, and one of them was of a monarch butterfly on a leaf. I kept the leaf green, but I decided to make the butterfly purple and pink, which are my favorite colors.  It was a fun class, and now my favorite form of painting is with watercolors!
