Mall Goth Review

Image
TW: Mentioning of predatory relationships I think I expected too much from this one... Mall Goth by Kate Leth is set in the 2000s and follows a bisexual teenage goth girl named Liv. She has just moved with her mother to a new town with a giant mall. Liv starts spending most of her free time at the mall, and ends up getting a job at Create-a-Critter (like Build a Bear Workshop) through the mall's security guard, Alice. Alice is also one of her mom's friends.  At Liv's new school, she becomes acquainted with two other goths named Jake and Aaron. They really like gaming, and invite Liv to join their server to play a popular MMORPG. The guy named Jake also has an on-again off-again relationship with another girl in their English class named Layla. Liv also becomes friends with Layla, but their friendship is put to the test when it comes to Jake's behavior.  Unfortunately, as all of this is happening, Liv's English teacher Mr. Trent seems to have a thing for her, and w...

12 Books 12 Friends #1: Creepy Cat Manga Series

Image
(Made in Canva by me. Pics were found on Google Images) T his is my first review for the 12 books 12 friends recommendations challenge . The Creepy Cat series by Cotton Valent was recommended by @rhymingvine over on Instagram.  Wanna know something weird about this series? I actually read the first volume back in 2023, I gave it 4 stars, and in that review I said I would read the rest of the books, but somehow I forgot about them until now. You can view that post here .  Well, I finally read all 4 books! What do I think about the series as a whole? The rest of the series is not what I expected! Book 1 is very much slice of life with Flora (our 20-something goth artist lady MC) dealing with Creepy Cat's magical shenanigans in her new house, along with her new friend Oscar, a police officer who has had a crush on her since they both were in high school. In the next several books we get introduced to even more Creepy Cats (just with different colored fur and different names). We...

Courtney Crumrin Book 1 Review

Image
(Pic was found on Google Images) This was a graphic novel that I read back in middle school, but I couldn't remember a single thing that happened. Did I like it the second time around? Well... Courtney Crumrin and the Night Things by Ted Naifeh is about Courtney, a preteen girl who  with her snobby and clueless parents move in with her Great Uncle Aloysius, who lives in a mansion that looks haunted. The great uncle and his house seem to have mysteries of their own. Courtney dislikes her new school but is able to somewhat become friends with a guy nicknamed "Stain", who is an outcast like her. Stain gets picked on frequently by the popular rich kids at the school, who keep demanding money from him. Courtney gets lumped into the situation, but is able to save her new friend and defeat the bullies with some help with her new eerie creature friends at her great uncle's mansion, and with a bit of magic.  It's a very simple story, but it was very entertaining! I love t...

CREEPY CAT VOLUME 1

Image
So I picked up this graphic novel on a whim at the library a few days ago because I needed something smaller to read as I am reading three bigger books. Well, this was fun! Creepy Cat by Cotton Valent is a slice of life gothic graphic novel of a goth girl named Flora who moves into a gothic mansion she inherited from a family member of hers, and discovers the place is "haunted" by some cat-looking creature who can shapeshift, multiply itself, and do other odd things. Flora is very excited to have this cat, but he sometimes makes her life difficult, and sometimes the police gets involve. The policeman who visits her house frequently is named Oscar, and Flora eventually befriends him, too. Flora and Oscar then try to figure out what this cat like creature is and why he behaves so strange while going about their daily lives.  I know it sounds like there is an overarching plot, but for the most part, there isn't really a cohesive plot. It's largely just slice-of-life, ...
