The Magic Fish Review

Image
I finally read this and it was wonderful! The Magic Fish by Trung Le Nguyen is a story about a boy named Tien and his parents, that learn to connect with each other through fairy tales. These stories help Tien come out to his mother as gay, and his mother also comes to terms with her past with leaving Vietnam.  Aside from the beautifully woven story, the pictures in this book were really beautiful! I especially loved the illustrations that accompanied the fairy tale portions of the book. They were so detailed. They reminded me a little of the manga Witch Hat Atelier.  I gave The Magic Fish 5 stars. A great book not just for Pride Month, but anytime of the year.

Taproot Review

Why'd it take me so long to get around to this? It was great! Taproot by Keezy Young follows a young gardener named Hamal, who can see ghosts. Every around him that he works with thinks he's weird. But Hamal is just happy to have so many friendly ghosts to keep him company. He usually talks to this one ghost named Blue. The two have gotten really close recently.  There is a reaper who lives in the forest nearby, and they've found out about Hamal practicing necromancy without a license. They threaten Blue about it whenever he visits the forest. Blue and Hamal come up with a plan to ease the reaper and for Hamal to get his license to talk to and work with ghosts. And for the two of them to be together! This was such a simple but very heartwarming story! I liked Blue and Hamal's dynamic, and I loved the message about the cycles and balance of natural life.  I did give it 4 stars though, but that was mostly due to pacing issues. I also thought the second half of th...

Fake Dates and Mooncakes Review

Image
The PERFECT romance book! Fake Dates and Mooncakes by Sher Lee is about Dylan, a teenage boy who works at his Aunt Jade's Singaporean Chinese takeout shop. His family has been struggling financially, and they are worried they won't be able to keep the shop open. Dylan finds out about a mooncake making contest run by a celebrity chef named Lawrence Lim. The winner will get their restaurant showcased on Lim's TV show. Dylan decides to enter the contest, thinking if the shop makes some publicity, they might get more customers.  Then, one day Dylan accidentally gets the order wrong of a rich customer named Adrian, and Adrian makes a big deal out of it. Adrien's equally rich friend Theo, who was there when the incident happened, makes up for it by visiting and eating at the takeout shop. Eventually Theo and Dylan become friends, and Theo decides to make a donation to Dylan's aunt Jade to keep the shop afloat for much longer. Dylan's family is very happy about it. Th...

I FINALLY READ LOVELESS BY ALICE OSEMAN!

Image
Well I haven't updated this blog in a while, but that was because I was trying to find the best way to describe my experience with reading Loveless by Alice Oseman.  This story is about a college freshman named Georgia Warr, who despite loving things like romance novels and romance movies, she has never had a crush on anyone and has never dated anyone, let alone kissed someone. She feels as if she's missing out on life, especially when everyone her age, including her own two friends Pip (real named Felipa) and Jason, has already gone on so many dates.  With the help of her new friend and roommate Rooney, Georgia tries experimenting with whom she could possibly like. So she first tries to date a guy. She starts with her friend Jason (which fails drastically), and then she thinks she might like girls, so she and Rooney kiss, but she ends up upsetting her friend Pip, who already had a crush on Rooney.  After a conversation about aromanticism and asexuality with her c...
