Alice in Kyoto Forest Volume 1 Review

Image
It's been a while since I used my dolls for a book picture! I knew Bunny Blanche and Madeline Hatter from Every After High would be perfect for this. Alice in Kyoto Forest by Mai Mochizuki and Haruki Niwa is about Alice Shirakawa, a 15 year old orphan who loves books and lives with her aunt and uncle. However, her uncle wants nothing to do with her, and so Alice decides she should move out and find a job to support herself. She finds an advertisement to be an apprentice to a geisha (called a maiko) in Kyoto, where she was originally from. But when she moves back to Kyoto, it isn't the Kyoto she remembered! It looks historical... and magical. Alice tries to figure out the mystery of this new world she was whisked away to, her true purpose there, and reunite with her childhood friend, Ren.  So far I love this story! It's very obviously inspired by Alice in Wonderland. Overall, it also reminded me of some Studio Ghibli movies, most notably Spirited Away, Howl's Moving C...

The Legend of Shadow High Review

Image
Do you like Monster High, Ever After High, or both?  Either way, Here's a crossover book between my two of my favorite doll franchises! Was this story good? Well... The Legend of Shadow High by Shannon Hale and Dean Hale starts off with Frankie Stein and Draculaura from Monster High who hear rumors about a high school monsters historically went to called Shadow High. They find a map and try out some spells to take them to this  Shadow High, but they end up in Ever After High instead! When their sudden appearance causes chaos and gets them in trouble, they are taken under the wings of Apple White and Raven Queen, and they become friends. Well, the new friends find out that Raven's mother, the Evil Queen, wants to also get to Shadow High and take over the World of Stories. The World of Stories happens to be the world where all fictional characters (monsters and fairy tale characters mostly) live, separate from our world by the Fourth Wall (get it?). They have to stop the...

Do Nothing by Celeste Headlee Review

Image
This past week I was also reading Do Nothing by Celeste Headlee . It is a nonfiction book written by an NPR journalist. This book is all about how we've become so obsessed with productivity as a society and what we can do to slow down and feel less stressed out. Since this is a nonfiction book, I review nonfiction very differently from fiction, unless it is a memoir. That is why I do not have a spoiler free tag, because there's really nothing to spoil. This is a general information/self-help book, and I will give mostly general ideas of what the book is about and how the author organizes the information. It is up to you if you want to read this book to get all the details. I really like the way the book is written. Celeste Headlee has a very approachable writing style that I think general audiences can read from. The first half of the book is a detailed history on how particularly American culture has become very obsessed with productivity. At the same time, the author ...
