Underrated Books Part 21!

I want to get back in the groove of posting another part of this series once a month. Let's see how it goes. 1. The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls -okay, this one is actually kind of popular in memoir circles! This is the story of author and journalist Jeannette Walls and her life growing up in an unconventional and dysfunctional family, and how she escaped and changed her life for the better while acknowledging you can never truly escape your past.  2. Aquicorn Cove by K. O'Neill -another whimsical book from author K. O'Neill all about protecting the environment to protect the animals--including magical ones!  3. They Called Us Enemy by George Takei -you know what, this memoir is quite popular, too! This is a graphic novel memoir about popular actor George Takei's experience as a victim of the Japanese internment camps during WW2, and a little bit on how he became an actor as an adult.  4. Sylvia Doe and the 100 Year Flood by Robert Beatty -a middle grade novel a...

A Natural History of Dragons Review

Image
What a unique fantasy book! A Natural History of Dragons by Marie Brennan is the first of several books set in a world similar to ours; in a time period and place that heavily mirrors the 19th century in Europe. In this world, dragons are real. The main character is a woman named Isabella who is a scientist that studies dragons. She tells us her story in a memoir format.  In this first book Isabella tells us how she first got interested in dragons. Then how she met her husband Jacob, who was also a dragon-loving scientist. The bulk of the story is about a trip Isabella, Jacob, and some of their friends take to another country called Vystrana (that seems to resemble Russia) to study rock-wyrms, a type of dragon. The main characters are from Scirland, which seems to resemble England. But while they are there, they end up getting caught in the web of a conspiracy that is tied to the dragons that they are studying. Isabella ends up having an unforgettable (and scary!) adventure...

Halfway There Review

Image
Where do we even begin?! Halfway There by Christine Mari is a graphic novel memoir about the author growing up struggling with her half-Japanese, half-American identity. During her college years, she studies abroad in Japan thinking she'll be able to find who she truly is, but instead deals with more identity crises. It all leads to depression, and she learns to reach out and ask for help from her grandparents and a therapist.  You really have to read this book to understand how lovely and heartfelt it is! For me it was relatable in so many parts (having parents from two different countries, not knowing where I belong, mental health struggles, getting help when needed, being a great artist, etc.). I really saw myself in this author! I gave it 5 stars .

Almost American Girl Review

Image
I finally got around to reading this graphic novel memoir!   Almost American Girl by Robin Ha is the story of the author growing up in 80s and 90s in South Korea, then in Alabama, then in Virginia. She faces family drama, language barriers, racism, and feeling like she fits in nowhere. One of the things that keeps her going is her love of art. In particular, her love of comics. She eventually comes to accept herself in her early college years as a Korean-American.   I don't know what else to say except that this memoir was great! I gave it 5 stars . I saw myself a lot in Robin, even though my background is slightly different from hers. I also moved twice when I was a kid to two different states, and had the same growing pains as her. I also loved (and still love) drawing and comics, and that also kept me afloat as I was growing up!

What I Read and DNF'd the Last 4 Months

Well, it's a long list so instead of dividing it up by month, I will divide it up by ratings. Tiny Dancer Review

Image
Another graphic novel about dance! Tiny Dancer by Siena Cherson Siegel is a memoir about the author growing up as a ballet dancer. She is very passionate about it--until one day during a summer dance session she gets a very bad injury that alters her dancing skills. She goes through a period where she feels she is unable to do anything and be good at all of it. Especially when her friends all move up into higher levels and all end up at prestigious dance schools. Siena ends up quitting ballet in high school, and she tries to find other paths in life to become passionate about. Luckily, her love of ballet never goes away!  This was one of the most relatable memoirs I have read so far! I did ballet all throughout elementary school and part of middle school. I never got any serious injuries from it, but in middle school I did quit doing it because I wasn't enjoying it as much as I once was. I later on found out it was mainly because of sensory issues (after I was diagnosed wit...

Better Living Through Birding Review

Image
This book was a part of the 12 books 12 friends challenge.  Better Living Through Birding: Notes from a Black Man about the Natural World by Christian Cooper is a memoir about various parts of the author's life: growing up in New York, his family, finding out he was gay, his time working at Marvel, traveling the world, and many more. Everything is tied together through his love of bird watching. As he tells us stories about parts of his life, he also drops facts on different kinds of birds and how you can be a good birdwatcher, too. It's a cool memoir! I especially liked the parts where he talked about working at Marvel, and how it was like growing up as a gay black man in the second half of the 20th century. I also have a mild interest in bird watching, and I had no idea so many things went into trying to find birds.  I do have to give it 4 stars though, because the book did feel a little disjointed at times. There were some chapters I felt that the author was trying ...

Passing for Human Review

Image
This book is a part of the 12 books by 12 friends reading challenge. Passing for Human by Liana Finck is a graphic novel memoir of the author growing up in addition to her family's history. The central theme is "finding your shadow...again", which is basically a message of never losing sight of who you really are, even when the world seems against you. The author illustrates this through her own love of art. Sometimes the main story line gets interrupted with the Creation story from Genesis, but it ties in really well with the overall theme.  This was such an emotional and moving memoir! I love Finck's art style--it is so unique and whimsical. I gave this book a solid 5 stars .

Favorite Authors Part 12: Raina Telgemeier

It's a short post today, but today we will talk about my experience with Raina Telgemeier's books! Her website is here:  https://goraina.com/ The first book I read from her years ago is her most popular book: Smile . It was great! I then right away picked up Sisters , which is kind of a sequel to Smile . It was really enjoyable, too!  I then picked up Drama , which, unlike the first two, is a fictional story and not a memoir about parts of her life. Again, it was really sweet! I have yet to read  Guts  (which is her third memoir) and  Ghosts , her second fictional story. They are on my TBR! I hope they are as good as the first three books I read from her. So why do I like Raina Telgemeier's books? She has a really cute art style and her stories are very funny and relatable!

Day 21 of Nonfiction November

Image
The prompt is an underhyped nonfiction book. I recommend a book that I read in 2022 before I started my book blog. It is: (Pic was found on Google Images) It's a memoir about the author who grew up in Fairfield, Iowa, which was the hub of where the Transcendental Meditation (TM) movement takes place. She talks about the nice things and the not-so nice things of growing up in a community like that, and what is she doing now with her life. Check it out if you like memoirs!

Nonfiction November Day 12: Music

Image
I interpreted this prompt to mean a nonfiction book about music. So here's a book on my TBR that is about music: (Pic was found on Google Images) This is a memoir published in 2020 with a focus on Dolly Parton's music career. I might not read it this year, but I hope to get around to it sometime! What's your favorite Dolly Parton song? Mine is Here You Come Again. You can listen to it here:

Nonfiction November Day 4 (except it's posted on Day 5)

I forgot to post this yesterday! But that's okay. Today's (Day 5) prompt was just telling me to go vote. Which I already did.  The prompt for Day 4 is: what is my favorite subject? I seem to mostly gravitate towards memoirs! Most of my favorite nonfiction books are memoirs. Here's a list I recommend (links to Goodreads are provided): 1. Persepolis (and its sequel) by Marjane Satrapi 2. The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls 3. They Called Us Enemy by George Takei 4. My Life in France by Julia Child 5. Greetings From Utopia Park by Claire Hoffman 6. Smile (and Sisters ) by Raina Telgemeier 7. Bicycling with Butterflies by Sara Dykman 8. Messy Roots by Laura Gao 9. Huda F Are You (and Huda F Cares ) by Huda Fahmy

I Will Be Participating in Nonfiction November!

Image
Today is Day 1 of Nonfiction November! Nonfiction November is something that was started by the Booktuber @abookolive . She runs it primarily over on Instagram. Olive has made prompts for everyday of November regarding nonfiction books. Today's prompt is what is on my TBR for Nonfiction November. Well, so far I only have two books. They are: I might also read Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser. We'll see! Hopefully I can find a new favorite and rekindle my love of reading nonfiction, too! The only other nonfiction book I read and liked this year was They Called Us Enemy by George Takei.  I will also not participate in every single prompt because I have some other things I want to talk about this month. But I will participate in the majority of the prompts!

Books I read and recommend before making this blog

This is a sample list of some books I've read before making this blog about books. And I highly recommend all of them! You might already recognize several of these books since I've talked about them a couple of times on my before. But here they all are in a nice little list.  1. The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls 2. The Sun is also a Star by Nicola Yoon 3. Moxie by Jennifer Mathieu 4. Since You've Been Gone by Morgan Matson 5. Close Enough to Touch by Colleen Oakley 6. Just Ella by Margaret Peterson Haddix 7. Favorite Authors Part 7: Judy Blume

A much shorter post today. She's probably the most popular middle grade and YA author of all time! When I was a kid, I read three of Judy Blume's books: Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing, Are You There God? It's me. Margaret , and It's Not the End of the World . I love all three of them!  I tried reading Iggie's House a while ago, but I didn't like it very much. I actually DNF'd it. But now I have almost all of her books on my TBR! I especially want to read the rest of the Fudge series.  Did you know she's written a couple of books for adults, too? I am thinking about checking them out.  I found out there is a nonfiction book that came out recently by Rachelle Bergenstein that details Judy Blume and her impact on children's literature. It's called The Genius of Judy . There's also a documentary movie that came out last year about her impact on young adult literature called J udy Blume Forever (not to be confused with her book of the same name).
