Sheine Lende Review

Image
This is the prequel to Elatsoe , which I read and reviewed last year. You can read that review here . Sheine Lende by Darcie Little Badger is about the maternal grandmother of Ellie from the first book, named Shane (well, her name is Sheine Lende meaning sunflower in the Lipan language, but everyone usually just calls her Shane). Set in the 1970s mostly in Texas, Shane and her mother Lorenza have a search-and-rescue business along with their three dogs (well, two live dogs and a ghost dog) Neal, Nealy, and Nellie. They usually search for people in their community that go missing.  But one day as they are trying to investigate the disappearance of Bobby, the younger brother of their neighbor named Donnie, Lorenza mysteriously goes missing, too! Shane, her brother Marcos, and their Grandpa Louis team up with Donnie and her grandparents to find both people. They end up going on a road trip involving all sorts of things from eccentric scientists, otherworldly creatures, and invasive m...

I FINALLY READ ELATSOE!

Image
TW: Family member dying mentioned. The book itself has a lot more trigger warnings not discussed here. You can read the full list on this website here: https://booktriggerwarnings.com/Elatsoe_by_Darcie_Little_Badger    This was on my TBR forever, and I am glad to report that this book did not disappoint. Elatsoe by Darcie Little Badger is set in a world like ours--but have been shaped by magic and legends of different groups of people. The story is about a Lipan Apache girl named Elatsoe (or Ellie as she is usually called), her ghost dog Kirby, and her best friend Jay. They get thrown into solving a murder mystery case of Ellie's cousin, Trevor. When Ellie and her parents visit her cousin in law Lenore (Trevor's widow) and baby second cousin Gregory to keep them company, they find out the town they live in is rather...odd. It seems to center heavily around an eccentric doctor named Abe Allerton, who might have had something to do with Trevor dying. The task is dangerous...

Underrated Books Part 2

I promised you a long time ago I would make a part 2! Here are other underrated books I have read in the last few years that I recommend you read as well. 1. Sleeping Around by Morgan Vega This is a YA novel about 18-year old violinist Coralee Reed who grew up in the foster care system (and gets extended foster care in the beginning of the book) and is starting her first year of college. Due to a miscommunication, she is unable to get into the dorm that is associated with the music program of her college, and has to share a room with two other girls until she gets a permanent solution. While Corey (her nickname) is navigating her new life at college, she wonders if she will ever find her place in the world, especially after having grown up going around from foster home to foster home and not having a stable group of friends at her many schools. Additionally, a formerly rocky relationship she had with another violinist named Dylan is starting to change for the better. You can check out ...

A SNAKE FALLS TO EARTH SPOILER FREE REVIEW

Image
TW: brief mention of guns and shooting New favorite book of the year!  A Snake Falls to Earth by Darcie Little Badger is a YA urban fantasy about two teenagers: Nina and Oli. Nina is a Lipan Apache girl living in Texas who is interested in the stories of The Reflecting World, which is a magical world that mirrors Earth but is home to shapeshifting animals who can turn themselves into humans. She films and records stories she hears on the St0ryte11er app with her followers. Oli is one of these shapeshifters from The Reflecting World, and in his true form he is a cottonmouth snake (in the book their "false form" refers to their human form). He is able to leave home for the first time by himself, and on his journey he befriends several other shapeshifters, two coyote sisters named Risk and Reign, and a hawk named Brightest. He also befriends a little frog named Ami.  Well, the two run into problems. Where Nina lives in Texas, a hurricane is approaching, and she and her fam...

Intimidating TBR Tag

Image
This is a tag that's been around for a couple of years and I thought it would be perfect to do it now! Since, y'know, I have like 500 books on my TBR as of writing this... 1. A book on your TBR pile that you haven't finished. For this I say I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith . So far what I read of this books is so good (gives off a lot of vibes similar to Anne of Green Gables), but for some reason, every time I read it, I only read a few chapters of it and then put it off for days or even weeks. I guess since the book is so good, I am trying to make it last longer so I can spend more time with it. But it's a stand-alone novel, and usually I can breeze through those in a few days. I dunno, it's weird! 🤷 2. A book you just haven't had the time for. Elatsoe by Darcie Little Badger. I actually checked out this book twice from the library last year, but everytime I did I never read it. It's not that I lost interest...I think I was just not in the right mood...
