Anime/Manga Poem #11

Image
Today's poem is inspired by my favorite seasons of the Pretty Cure series from Toei Animation so far! The video above contains all of the openings of the anime up until 2024. "Come one Come all Other parallel worlds Need our help Come one Come all We have Some cute animal fairy friends Come one Come all Give us Shiny trinkets Come one Come all Let us transform To stop these monsters Come one Come all Everyone can enjoy Anything Whether its flowers Or food Or outer space Or medicine Or animals"

Favorite Authors Part 12: Raina Telgemeier

It's a short post today, but today we will talk about my experience with Raina Telgemeier's books! Her website is here:  https://goraina.com/ The first book I read from her years ago is her most popular book: Smile . It was great! I then right away picked up Sisters , which is kind of a sequel to Smile . It was really enjoyable, too!  I then picked up Drama , which, unlike the first two, is a fictional story and not a memoir about parts of her life. Again, it was really sweet! I have yet to read  Guts  (which is her third memoir) and  Ghosts , her second fictional story. They are on my TBR! I hope they are as good as the first three books I read from her. So why do I like Raina Telgemeier's books? She has a really cute art style and her stories are very funny and relatable!

Sakura, Saku Vol 1 Review

Image
My second attempt at something written by Io Sakisaka . A couple of years ago I tried watching the anime of Ao Haru Ride but I couldn't get into it. But I decided to give another one of her series a chance, so I picked up Sakura, Saku . So far I am liking it! I am thinking about going back and giving Ao Haru Ride another chance.  This series is about a girl named Saku who is helped out by a mysterious stranger named Ryosuke Sakura on the train to school one day when she feels dizzy and almost loses her schoolbag. But she didn't see how he looked like, and she wanted to find him to thank him, since the phone number he left her doesn't work. And ever since that one day, she's wanted to help people out every chance she gets. Saku finds out a guy in her class named Haruki Sakura has an older brother named Ryosuke, and she thinks that's the guy she was looking for. She asks him to connect her with his brother, but Haruki is reluctant because he thinks Saku is another o...

The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity Review

Image
Another cute romance manga I am kinda late to the party on!  The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity by Saka Mikami follows Rintaro, a boy who goes to a rather lowly public high school. The school is right next to a prestigious all-girls private high school. At Rintaro's family bakery, a girl who frequents there to eat their delicious cake is a girl named Kaoruko. Rintaro starts talking to Kaoruko and they hit it off pretty well, and they find themselves falling in love with each other. However, she goes to the prestigious all girls high school, and Rintaro wonders if they can even keep seeing each other if their respective friend groups have tension with each other since they come from rival high schools. The two teenagers find a way to make it work! I've only read the first volume so far but I am already obsessed. It's just like how I felt when I started A Sign of Affection (speaking of which, I need to read the second omnibus for that!). I've just really been cr...

I FINALLY READ THE PRINCESS AND GRILLED CHEESE SANDWICH!

Image
OMG this book was so cute! Now I am craving grilled cheese sandwiches😋. The Princess and the Grilled Cheese Sandwich by Deya Muniz is about Lady Camembert, who like women and obviously doesn't want to marry any men. But she is left orphaned and her father's last wish was that she moved somewhere new in the country of Fondue with her lady-in-waiting Feta and pretend to be a man. So she starts living as Count Camembert. But she has to keep a low profile as much as possible, while still expecting to get married.  Cam (that's her nickname) quickly gets bored being at home all day, so she decides to attend a ball hosted by the princess of the kingdom, named Princess Brie. She quickly catches the attention of Brie and they become friends. They finds themselves falling in love with each other, but Cam is worried about her secret of pretending to be a boy getting out. Luckily, Brie's other friends, Ricotta and Gorgonzola (or Zola for short) help out with the situation. They ...

Seance Tea Party Review

Image
I picked up this graphic novel on a whim, and it was perfect timing! Seance Tea Party by Remina Yee is about Lora, a girl in middle school who is social outcast and doesn't have a large circle of friends. One day she does a séance in her house and she summons a ghost--who happens to be her old imaginary friend named Alexa. She spends a lot of time having magical adventures with Alexa. Everything seems fine--except Alexa seems to be hiding some secrets from Lora. At the same time, Lora is afraid to grow up.  This book totally stole my heart--it had a wonderful story, wonderful messages, and the artwork is gorgeous! It reminded me of The Tea Dragon Society  books by Kay O'Neill. If you are a fan of those books, check this out!  But I did give it 4.5 stars , but that was just because of Alexa's backstory. I can't tell you what it is because of spoilers, but it might trigger some people. Either way, great book!

I Started Reading the Yotsuba&! Manga series

Image
Fun fact: I actually read part of this series way back when I was in middle school, but I never read all of the volumes. Now I'm planning on reading all of them! Yotsuba&! by Kiyohiko Azuma is a cute, chill, slice of life series about a little girl named Yotsuba, her adoptive father, and their new neighbors. Every chapter follows Yotsuba as she goes on little adventures when she becomes fascinated with seemingly everyday items and occurences, from air conditioners to cicadas. The humor in the series often comes from Yotsuba misunderstanding things.  I enjoyed this series when I read part of it as a kid, but I think I love it even more as an adult! I think it's because it's such a sweet and heartwarming series about everyday life with such lovable characters. I definitely needed this book more as an adult especially when life gets so stressful. This first volume got 5 stars from me. Excited to read the rest of the series!

Unfamiliar Volume 2 Brief Review

Image
Yeah, I just talked about the first book a few days ago, but I got to talk about the sequel! Something I rarely ever do, but that's because this sequel blew my mind! Unfamiliar Volume 2 by Haley Newsome is the sequel to Unfamiliar Volume 1 . In this sequel, it is a lot more story driven, a lot more darker, and a lot more serious. There's more character development, and twists about some characters we've met in previous volumes. While out witchy girls continue dealing with mishaps mostly involving ghosts, two of our characters fall in love (yup, a Sapphic romance! 😃). But overall, it still has the same cozy vibes just like the first book. A pure 5 star book ! I hope I convinced you to put these books on your TBR if you haven't already. I'd seriously love to read anything else this author puts out! I've also started watching her YouTube channel. 😉

Unfamiliar Volume 1 Review

Image
In the mood for a cute, chill, and funny graphic novel with witches in it? Check this out! Unfamiliar by Haley Newsome is a slice-of-life, high fantasy graphic novel following a group of friends who are witches: Planchette (on the cover) is a friendly kitchen witch, Pinyon, a witch who calls herself the "worst witch" in town, Babs, a shy witch who is part siren (type of mermaid), and Sun, a witch with a curse who also works multiple jobs and is frequently grumpy. Most of their adventures usually involve Planchette's new house, which is haunted with ghosts who will only leave if they finally have the one thing they always wanted while they were still alive.  I loved the interactions between the characters, and I loved all the magic, too! I think my favorite thing about this book were the illustrations.  So it is a 5 star book from me. I can't wait to find and read the next volume!

Garlic and the Vampire Spoiler-Free Review

Image
I found this cute graphic novel on a whim the other day at the library and it was totally worth it. Garlic and the Vampire by Bree Paulsen is a graphic novel about an anthropomorphic garlic living with other anthropomorphic vegetables on a farm that belongs to a witch. They help her cultivate her garden and sell produce to the locals. On one particular day all the vegetables notice in the distance smoke coming out of a secluded castle in the distance. They all start jumping to conclusions thinking that a vampire must be living there, and they decide to send Garlic to investigate and maybe get rid of the vampire if there is one. Well, I'll leave off my spoiler free summary telling you that things aren't always what they seem. This book was soooo cute! I gave it 5 stars . I could see it being turned into a sweet little animated movie not just for little kids but for the whole family. If you like heartwarming, cozy, fantasy, mystery stories, check this graphic novel out! I'll...

CAKE POP CRUSH SPOILER FREE REVIEW

Image
Cake Pop Crush by Suzanne Nelson is a middle grade book that I bought back in middle school at a Scholastic Book Fair in 2012, when I was in middle school. That was 10 years ago! Only now did I decided to start reading it. And boy, was it a great idea! I'm glad I never gave the book away. Cake Pop Crush is about a girl named Alicia Ramirez whose family owns a small, old-fashioned bakery called Say it with Flour. Out of all the bakery items you can think of, Ali likes to bake cake pops, inspired heavily by her favorite celebrity baker, Renata DaLuca. Her family's bakery Say it with Flour has fallen under hard times recently, but they get even more competition when a popular coffee chain opens across the street from them, called Perk Up. Ali and her friends and family have to think up creative ways to save the business from falling under, usually involving Ali selling her cake pops. At the same time, Ali butts heads with the son of the owner/CEO of Perk Up, named Dane. But as ...

Listen To Your Heart by Kasie West Spoiler-Free Review

Image
I just finished reading Listen to Your Heart by Kasie West. This is sweet and cute YA contemporary novel.  It's kind of hard to give a simple summary on what happens in this book aside from the romance, but in this book, you will find (without getting into spoilers):  Our MC named Kate, loves lake activities and her family has a lake activity business that she wants to one day take over. Kate's BFF, Alana, is outgoing, loves to cook, and has a crush on a guy named Diego. A school podcast that Kate is reluctant about hosting at first but then realizes she has a knack for it. A classmate named Frank who's family has a rivalry with Kate's, but he wants to get along better with her. Bonding over magazines at a tutoring center Kate and her big family A little brother named Max and a cousin named Liza with their own fair share of problems. That's all I'll share for now! This was such a cute and fun book! Although it does get serious and dramatic in three of the chap...
