Other Books I Read in 2022 that I haven't mentioned yet

TW: Brief mentioning of injuries, racism, and transphobia Exactly what it says in the title. 1. The Incredible Journey by Sheila Burnford Goodreads summary here. Very captivating classic book! I gave it 4 stars since sometimes the descriptions of nature and injuries of the characters can get a little too into detail.  2. Anne of the Island by LM Montgomery. Goodreads summary here. I can't talk too much about it since it is the sequel to Anne of Avonlea , which itself is the sequel to Anne of Green Gables . All I can say is, it takes place over Anne's college years and it's just as romantic and sweet as the previous two books. 4.5 stars. 3. My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand Goodreads summary here. Well, this book has two other authors, I just put the first one of them. This is a great historical fantasy retelling of Lady Jane Grey! 4.5 stars.   4. Molly Moon Stops the World by Georgia Byng Goodreads summary here This is the sequel to Molly Moon's Incredible Book of Hypnotis

BEST BOOKS OF 2022!

Now I'm being positive! These are all 5 stars books I read this year.  I recommend all of these! For the first half I will just write what I thought of them and put a link to their Goodreads page so you can read their plot summary, but everything after starting with Where the Mountain meets the Moon will just be a list with no summary, as I already have blog posts for those you can check out for my full thoughts. I will be linking their respective posts. (Except the Babymouse books, the Shadow Children books, and volumes 2 and 3 of Heartstopper will have Goodreads pages and write their summary here since I read those before Meets the Moon, or they are sequels and I can't talk about spoilers).  1. Frindle by Andrew Clements. Goodreads page here.  This was such a short book, but so interesting! I loved how creative and funny Nick and his friends were to challenge their English teacher Mrs. Granger regarding dictionaries and words. I've started calling ball point pens frindl

Books I DNF (did not finish) in 2022

MAJOR TRIGGER WARNINGS:  Animal cruelty, death, s3xual harassment, kidnapping, gaslighting, and predatory behavior are all mentioned in this post. Please be cautious!   Well, there's a reason I didn't talk about any of the books on this list. Since I DNF them! And in my own humble opinion, I don't recommend any of these either. 1. The Penderwicks by Jeanne Birdsall.   This is a middle grade novel about four sisters and their father spending their summer at a cottage. It seemed like a cute book at first, but I was really disturbed at the way the characters were treating their pet dog. They kept on feeding him non food items such as a paper map. It seemed like animal cruelty to me.  2. The Big One Oh by Dean Pitchford This is a middle grade novel about a ten year old kid named Charley who is trying to make friends so he can invite them to his first birthday party ever that is horror-themed. It was okay for the most part but there is a subplot were Charley's older sister k

WORST BOOKS OF 2022

Image
These are books I read in their entirety this year. These are not books I DNF (did not finish). That will be it's own separate post. The best books of the year will come later this week. That will be more in list format since I read so many good books this year. This post and the DNF post which will also come later will be more detailed since I read very few books I didn't like this year. 1. The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett (pictured above) This book is about a girl named Mary Lennox who grew up in India and has been spoiled her whole life, but is also really lonely and craving company. After her parents die, she is sent to live with her rich Uncle Craven in the UK. There she meets a ton of new, friendly people and starts forming real human connections, and discovers a hidden garden that belonged to her late aunt that her uncle closed up after she died. Mary starts a mini project to tidy up the garden and make it look good, and forms more human connections thro

NANCY DREW AND THE HIDDEN STAIRCASE SPOILER FREE REVIEW

Image
The second OG Nancy Drew book! Nancy Drew and The Hidden Staircase by Carolyn Keene follow Nancy Drew solving a mystery over at the estate of her best friend Helen's great grandmother, Miss Flora. Miss Flora's big house has been reported to be haunted: things keep moving and food keeps getting stolen. Nancy and Helen attempt to find the ghost or the person who keeps messing around the house. At the same time, Nancy's father gets swept up in a case of his own where a man named Willie Wheaton wants to build a new railroad, but the papers that have Wheaton's signature on them aren't probably legitimate. What's distracting Nancy and her father the most is a suspicious man named Nathan Gomber, who seems to have something against Nancy and her father. Just like the last book, the main mystery and the sub-mystery seem to have nothing to do with each other, but at the end they come together. I won't tell you how!  This was such a fun book to read! It was a little

I FINALLY STARTED READING BONE BY JEFF SMITH

Image
I've known about the graphic novel series since I was in elementary school because a lot of kids in my class liked it, but I didn't start reading it until now. Just like every series I review on here, I will only review the first book without spoilers, and I will occasionally update you all when I am reading the subsequent books.  The first volume of Bone by Jeff Smith is titled Out from Boneville. Our MCs are the 3 Bone cousins: Fone Bone, Phoney Bone, and Smiley Bone. They got kicked out of Boneville because of some really bad thing mostly Phoney Bone did (he's also a shady businessman). They accidentally become separated when a huge swarm of locusts chase after them. They then all try to survive without each other. We mostly follow Fone Bone (on the cover of this book) as he tries to survive in the huge woods through the winter. He later encounters and even becomes good friends with a young girl named Thorn and her grandmother, and they let him stay on their farm unti

I FINALLY READ MUGGIE MAGGIE BY BEVERLY CLEARY

Image
It's a really thin middle grade book but it's worth your time! Muggie Maggie by Beverly Cleary is a classic middle grade novel (well, it's from the 90s) about a third grader named Maggie who does not see the need to learn cursive because she already knows how to write in print and type on a computer. Her defiance catches the attention of her parents and teacher, and they try clever ways to convince her to learn and write in cursive, one big one being them starting to write everything in cursive to her, which makes her have to learn how to read in it, but it's hard at first. Some kids in her class tease her for her rebelliousness. One kid starts calling her "Muggie Maggie" because she can't write her a's properly in cursive, making her name come out like "Muggie". Eventually her teacher Mrs. Leeper comes up with the best way to convince Maggie to learn cursive for herself.  This was such a cute and fun book! It's also a super easy, quick

A SNAKE FALLS TO EARTH SPOILER FREE REVIEW

Image
TW: brief mention of guns and shooting New favorite book of the year!  A Snake Falls to Earth by Darcie Little Badger is a YA urban fantasy about two teenagers: Nina and Oli. Nina is a Lipan Apache girl living in Texas who is interested in the stories of The Reflecting World, which is a magical world that mirrors Earth but is home to shapeshifting animals who can turn themselves into humans. She films and records stories she hears on the St0ryte11er app with her followers. Oli is one of these shapeshifters from The Reflecting World, and in his true form he is a cottonmouth snake (in the book their "false form" refers to their human form). He is able to leave home for the first time by himself, and on his journey he befriends several other shapeshifters, two coyote sisters named Risk and Reign, and a hawk named Brightest. He also befriends a little frog named Ami.  Well, the two run into problems. Where Nina lives in Texas, a hurricane is approaching, and she and her family

Baba Yaga's Assistant Graphic Novel Spoiler Free Review

Trigger warning: family death Another great graphic novel you can read in a day! Baba Yaga's Assistant by Marika McCoola and Emily Carroll.  The main character is a half Russian-half American girl named Masha who lost her mother when she was younger, and was raised by her grandmother and father. But she also just recently lost her grandmother, and her father has been dating another woman who already has a daughter of her own named Dani who does not like Masha. Feeling unappreciated in her new family circumstances, Masha decides to run away from home, into the woods, and become Baba Yaga's assistant.  Masha has always been impressed by Baba Yaga's stories thanks to her grandmother. When she gets to Baba Yaga's famous house, Baba Yaga gives her three tricky tests to see if she is worthy of becoming her assistant. You'll have to find out if she passes the tests and what else happens... What else can I say! Such a great, little, magical, witchy story! 5 stars! Check t

THE BLUE CASTLE SPOILER FREE REVIEW

Image
This book is more proof LM Montgomery is one of my favorite authors ever. The Blue Castle by LM Montgomery is a classic romance novel taking place in the 1920s in Deerwood, a fictional city in Ontario, Canada. Our main character is 29-year old Valancy Stirling, who is considered an "old-maid" and shunned by her family because she is 29 years old and not married yet. Valancy has also felt that she has always got the short end of the stick when it came to everything in her family, and she wishes to get away from them to finally live the life she wants. She at first mostly does this by daydreaming about a blue castle where she has everything she's ever wanted. Valancy also gets sick frequently, and one day she gets a letter in the mail from her family doctor that she only has a year left to live. Wanting to live her last year of life to the fullest, Valancy finally stops being a doormat towards her family. She also leaves them by going to take care of a sickly family frie

FLIP THE SCRIPT SPOILER FREE REVIEW

Image
This book is proof Lyla Lee is one of my favorite authors ever! Flip the Script is a YA Contemporary book about a Korean-American girl named Hana who lives in South Korea. She is an actress debuting in a new K-Drama called Fated Destiny alongside a teenage K-pop sensation named Bryan. As the show starts airing on TV, it isn't doing so hot on ratings, so the company president makes a decision for Hana and Bryan to start fake-dating, thinking it will boost viewership if fans see the actors "dating". Hana and Bryan aren't too sure about it, but they want their acting careers to take off, so they initially agree to do it. However, Hana has a secret: she's bi, and she has had a long time crush on her best friend and veteran K-Drama actress Minjee. Things start to get intense when a decision is made to cast Minjee as the love rival character in the show. Now Hana, Bryan, and Minjee all start trying to achieve their individual goals when it comes to their love lives

MOONCAKES GRAPHIC NOVEL SPOILER FREE REVIEW

Image
This past week I read the graphic novel Mooncakes by Wendy Xu and Suzanne Walker . And boy was it magical! The story stars Nova, who lives with her grandmothers who run a witchcraft shop. Nova's childhood friend (who is also a werewolf), Tam, comes back to town, and Nova is happy to rekindle her friendship with them. But at the same time, weird things have been happening in the forest near Nova's house, usually glowing lights going off at random times. Nova discovers it's a demon horse! For some reason, the demon horse is mostly after Tam. Nova, Tam, Nova's grandmothers, and Nova's friend Tatyana try to figure out where the demon horse came from, and why is it so interested in Tam, and what spells and potions can they use to ward it off.  I don't know what other words to use to describe how enchanting and heartwarming this story was! If you want another urban fantasy book about witches, mysteries, family, and friendship, check this book out! I gave is 5 stars

THE ANTI-TBR TAG

Time for unpopular opinions! This tag was originally created by Nicole and Her Books over on YouTube.  As always, feel free to do this tag if you see it! 1. A popular book you have no interest in reading. Honestly I have so many answers for this one. To give you a single answer, I'm going to have to go with Sadie by Courtney Summers . I remember so many people hyping this book up when it came out a few years ago, and I'm just not interested because I am simply not a fan of murder mystery stories. I was also told the book deals with some other really heavy stuff I wouldn't be able to stomach. So yeah, no Sadie for me. 🤷 2. A classic book or author you have no interest in reading. Again, too many answers, despite being a classics lover, but this time I'll have to go with War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy . I heard it's a really long book that takes a ton of effort to read, and the story itself is kind of boring. I do want to still read Anna Karenina though! 3. An author

Word by Word by Kory Stamper Spoiler-Free Review

Image
Not sure why I put "spoiler-free", because there isn't anything really to spoil. It's just a informative nonfiction book. And an interesting one, too! Word by Word by Kory Stamper is a nonfiction book all about how the dictionary (well, in this case, Merriam-Webster dictionaries) are made, and the history of them. Intertwined there's even a history on some words in the English language and grammar.  The author herself works for Merriam-Webster, and she also talks about what she and her coworkers do at their jobs to help write the dictionary we all know and love. Let me tell you, it was really fascinating and eye-opening! She debunked a lot of myths I personally had about how dictionaries are written. She also talked about the history of the English language and even myths about certain words and grammar. Some things that stood out to me that I learned were: lexicographers (like the author) aren't the only ones writing the dictionary. They have employees fro
