A SNAKE FALLS TO EARTH SPOILER FREE REVIEW

TW: brief mention of guns and shooting

New favorite book of the year!

A Snake Falls to Earth by Darcie Little Badger is a YA urban fantasy about two teenagers: Nina and Oli. Nina is a Lipan Apache girl living in Texas who is interested in the stories of The Reflecting World, which is a magical world that mirrors Earth but is home to shapeshifting animals who can turn themselves into humans. She films and records stories she hears on the St0ryte11er app with her followers. Oli is one of these shapeshifters from The Reflecting World, and in his true form he is a cottonmouth snake (in the book their "false form" refers to their human form). He is able to leave home for the first time by himself, and on his journey he befriends several other shapeshifters, two coyote sisters named Risk and Reign, and a hawk named Brightest. He also befriends a little frog named Ami.

Well, the two run into problems. Where Nina lives in Texas, a hurricane is approaching, and she and her family have to get ready and away from the hurricane, but for some reason, every time her grandmother gets far away from her property, she gets very sick, and Nina and her dad have to figure out what is going on and help her not get too sick. Then in the Reflecting World, Oli's frog friend Ami gets really sick, and the healers there think it's because his species is endangered on Earth, so Oli and his new friends have to travel to Earth to find out how to save Ami and his species, and they get Nina and her family's help. They end up working together to help each other out.

This was such a magical, heartwarming book! It was all so very engaging. It has no romance in it, but it's a beautiful story about friendship and family. Darcie Little Badger is one of my new favorite authors now. I hope to read Elatsoe and any other books she puts out soon!

I rated this book 5 stars. A bonus about this book is the representation: Nina and her family are Lipan Apache, Nina is aroace, and Brightest (one of Oli's friends) in nonbinary.

Even though it happens later in the story, there is one part where one character gets shot, but they do heal and survive. So, trigger warning for a gun and shooting. Please be cautious. ❤

Have you read any books with Indigenous representation?
