Courtney Crumrin Book 1 Review

This was a graphic novel that I read back in middle school, but I couldn't remember a single thing that happened. Did I like it the second time around? Well...

Courtney Crumrin and the Night Things by Ted Naifeh is about Courtney, a preteen girl who  with her snobby and clueless parents move in with her Great Uncle Aloysius, who lives in a mansion that looks haunted. The great uncle and his house seem to have mysteries of their own. Courtney dislikes her new school but is able to somewhat become friends with a guy nicknamed "Stain", who is an outcast like her. Stain gets picked on frequently by the popular rich kids at the school, who keep demanding money from him. Courtney gets lumped into the situation, but is able to save her new friend and defeat the bullies with some help with her new eerie creature friends at her great uncle's mansion, and with a bit of magic. 

It's a very simple story, but it was very entertaining! I love the overall vibe the story had. But for some reason, I don't feel like reading the rest of the series? It was a little too cliché for me. 

But the artwork is pretty cool! The only thing I don't like about it though is, for some reason, Courtney's nose is never drawn on her face? Everyone else's noses are drawn, but Courtney looks like she doesn't have a nose. That was weird. 

Whenever I feel that a book was good but not great, I give it 4 stars. That's what this book got. It was kind of fun to read, but I think I'd rather read other gothic-feeling books.

  A cozy little fantasy adventure with queer representation! The Baker and the Bard by Fern Haught follows two friends, Juniper and Hadley. They work at a bakery and sometimes perform at an inn. One day their boss at the bakery sends them on a mission to get some glowing oyster mushrooms in a big forest for a big order a rich customer places. The friends get notice that several crops nearby are failing. They find out the cause is because of giant caterpillars that belong to a fey (fairy) named Thistle. It turns out, the fey caterpillars have some problems of their own. Juniper and Hadley find a way to help Thistle and get the mushrooms they need for the bakery. I gave it 5 stars. It's such a simple, but magical story! I think this book is perfect if you're in the mood for some adventure but with not very high stakes. Kind of like Legends and Lattes! There is also queer rep in this book. Hadley and Thistle are nonbinary, and Juniper and Hadley become a Sapphic couple.

I Started Reading the Call the Name of the Night manga series!

  I hope this becomes a new favorite series! Call the Name of the Night by Tama Mitsuboshi is about Mira--a girl with a rare condition where everytime she gets anxious, everything around her gets engulfed in darkness and it scares people. She is currently living with a doctor and magician named Rei, who is researching her rare condition and will maybe find a cure for it. Mira's daily life with Rei is rather chill: she usually reads books, helps Rei with cooking, plays with little shadow creatures,  and hangs out in the garden.  One day, an old, rather sketchy acquaintance of Rei's names Cartos comes to visit, and Mira ends up learning something about herself she never knew.  So far, I am loving this!  I gave this first volume 5 stars .  I love the heartwarming magical cottagecore vibes and the gorgeous pictures. it's like a more chill version of Witch Hat Atelier, in my opinion.  I also love the dynamic between Mira and Rei! Favorite Childhood Online Games

Did you play any of these as a kid? I don't play on any of the ones that require an account anymore (plus Club Penguin no longer exists and my Webkinz account expired a long time ago), but the other ones I still play once in a while! 1. Webkinz-   I still have all 50 of my Webkinz (the stuffed animals in real life, I mean)!  Webkinz was everything to me all throughout elementary school.  2. Club Penguin- I played this one mostly in fourth and fifth grade (ages 9-10). It was a lot of fun! Although it was way more fun if you were a member (which I wasn't).  3. Poptropica- I always made my character look like me. Did you know the creator of this game is also the author of Diary of a Wimpy Kid ? 4. Funbrain- My favorites on here were the swinging game, the one where a guy runs on logs, Mighty Girl/Guy, and the Star Climber. They also had some online books, like Tess's Tree and the earliest draft of Wimpy Kid . 5. AddictingGames- well, I mostly played Red Remover on here....
