12 Books 12 Friends #1: Creepy Cat Manga Series

This is my first review for the 12 books 12 friends recommendations challenge. The Creepy Cat series by Cotton Valent was recommended by @rhymingvine over on Instagram. 

Wanna know something weird about this series? I actually read the first volume back in 2023, I gave it 4 stars, and in that review I said I would read the rest of the books, but somehow I forgot about them until now. You can view that post here. 

Well, I finally read all 4 books! What do I think about the series as a whole?

The rest of the series is not what I expected! Book 1 is very much slice of life with Flora (our 20-something goth artist lady MC) dealing with Creepy Cat's magical shenanigans in her new house, along with her new friend Oscar, a police officer who has had a crush on her since they both were in high school. In the next several books we get introduced to even more Creepy Cats (just with different colored fur and different names). We get introduced to new human characters, too, mostly other police officers who work with Oscar.  Then later a mystery plot kicks off surrounding Creepy Cats, their origins, and their true purposes. Oscar also tries to pursue a relationship with Flora, but it's hard. We also get introduced to more characters like Flora's other goth artist friends who are also struggling artists like her. They also have "creepy animals".! Then there are some other new characters who aren't as nice as they seem...and they want something with Flora and Creepy Cat. But considering the nature of the series, everything turns out fine. Flora discovers some things about herself she never knew, and now maybe Oscar has a chance with her. But then the most unexpected thing happens on the day of a solar eclipse...but then things go back to normal just as quickly, of course. With a happy ending.

So yeah, this series was a bunch of cute fun! I gave each book 4 stars. These books definitely reminded me of my phase back in middle school where I was obsessed with goth things (I never dressed as a goth, though. I just liked to look at the overall aesthetic).

  A cozy little fantasy adventure with queer representation! The Baker and the Bard by Fern Haught follows two friends, Juniper and Hadley. They work at a bakery and sometimes perform at an inn. One day their boss at the bakery sends them on a mission to get some glowing oyster mushrooms in a big forest for a big order a rich customer places. The friends get notice that several crops nearby are failing. They find out the cause is because of giant caterpillars that belong to a fey (fairy) named Thistle. It turns out, the fey caterpillars have some problems of their own. Juniper and Hadley find a way to help Thistle and get the mushrooms they need for the bakery. I gave it 5 stars. It's such a simple, but magical story! I think this book is perfect if you're in the mood for some adventure but with not very high stakes. Kind of like Legends and Lattes! There is also queer rep in this book. Hadley and Thistle are nonbinary, and Juniper and Hadley become a Sapphic couple.

Courtney Crumrin Book 1 Review

(Pic was found on Google Images) This was a graphic novel that I read back in middle school, but I couldn't remember a single thing that happened. Did I like it the second time around? Well... Courtney Crumrin and the Night Things by Ted Naifeh is about Courtney, a preteen girl who  with her snobby and clueless parents move in with her Great Uncle Aloysius, who lives in a mansion that looks haunted. The great uncle and his house seem to have mysteries of their own. Courtney dislikes her new school but is able to somewhat become friends with a guy nicknamed "Stain", who is an outcast like her. Stain gets picked on frequently by the popular rich kids at the school, who keep demanding money from him. Courtney gets lumped into the situation, but is able to save her new friend and defeat the bullies with some help with her new eerie creature friends at her great uncle's mansion, and with a bit of magic.  It's a very simple story, but it was very entertaining! Bianca Torre is Afraid of Everything Review

 TW: Mentioning of murder Whoa! Where do I begin? Bianca Torre is Afraid of Everything by Justine Pucella Winans is about Bianca, a nonbinary lesbian teenager who has a long list of fears. They spend a lot of their free time either secretly observing and making up stories about their neighbors, watching anime with their best friend Anderson, and birdwatching. But one day, Bianca witnesses something terrible happen to one of their neighbors: a guy they call Mr. Conspiracy. He gets murdered by a mysterious person wearing a bird mask. Bianca, Anderson, and later a girl Bianca has a crush on named Elaine all work together to solve the murder mystery.  This book got me hooked from page 1! And it might seem a bit odd, because I don't usually vibe with murder mysteries, but this author and this story made it work for me! The mystery part of it was cool.
