Bye Forever I Guess Review
TW: Mention of parents dying
This is the first book I read from Jodi Meadows that she wrote herself. Before this I read The Lady Janies series and The Mary series that she co-wrote with Cynthia Hand and Brodi Ashton.
Bye Forever I Guess is about 13 year old Ingrid Ant, who lives with her grandmother, who taught her how to knit and has her own knitting channel on YouTube (her grandma, not Ingrid). Ingrid also likes gaming, and she became friends with a girl named Lorren who is also her age through an virtual massive role player game. Lorren and Ingrid also bond over their favorite book series, Essa Starlight. Ingrid got into the series as a source of comfort after losing her parents in a car accident. Ingrid has a Scrollr (like Tumblr) account where she posts texts conversations she has with wrong numbers. It's called "Bye Forever I Guess" because the first wrong number text she got was from someone who ended the conversation with "bye forever I guess" after Ingrid told them they had the wrong number. She uses a fake name "Anony Mouse" for her Scrollr. Only Ingrid's grandmother, Lorren, and "friend" Rachel know that she is Anony Mouse.
One day they get new neighbors, and they have two children Ingrid's age (not twins, they were born less than a year apart). Their names are Oliver and Alyx. Ingrid hopes they can all become friends, but then her so-called friend Rachel steals them in front of her during lunchtime, much to Ingrid's humiliation. Ingrid decides that was the final straw between her and Rachel, and she starts avoiding her. Only Oliver seems to be friendly towards her, but Ingrid can't understand why he'd still want to talk to her while tolerating Rachel.
Then things get more complicated when Ingrid gets a wrong number text that was meant for someone named Rachel. Although she is not sure if it's her ex-friend Rachel. The wrong number text happens to be from a boy also in eighth grade, and he is also interested in the game Ingrid likes playing with Lorren. Soon the three friends start playing together. Ingrid starts to have feelings for Traveler (that's the role that the mysterious boy uses within the online game), although its awkward because she's never met him and she also starts having feelings for Oliver.
Yeah, this book has a lot going on! But I love how it packs so much within a short amount of time. I gave it 5 stars.
