JANE OF LANTERN HILL REVIEW

Image
Yup, another massively underrated book by LM Montgomery . I listened to it on audiobook this past month.  Jane of Lantern Hill is about Jane Stuart, who lives with her mother and grandmother in a mansion in Toronto. Jane does not have the best life there--her grandmother rules the place with an iron fist and is always being condescending towards Jane. Whenever Jane's other relatives visit, they are not kind to her either. Jane also gets bullied a lot at her school. Only Jane's mother and Jane's next door neighbor and friend Jody are kind to her--but Jane doesn't get to see them every single day (mother likes to go out to parties and hang out with friends, and Jody works as a maid at the boarding house she stays at and the landlady doesn't let her see Jane everyday). The main reason Jane's grandmother isn't kind to her was because she didn't approve of the marriage between her mother and father, so she despises Jane for being their daughter. The subject

Unpopular Opinions Book Tag 2023 Edition

Like my favorite booktuber Merphy Napier, I plan on redoing this tag every year as I read more books and I have more answers. Check out last year's answers here .  This tag was originally made by TheBookArcher on Booktube. Her original video is here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NYfgq8HgDc0&ab_channel=TheBookArcher As usual, feel free to do this tag if you see it! Here we go! 1. A popular book or series you didn't like.  I once again have too many answers for this one, but I will have to go with The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte . I found this book soooo boring! It was more of like a Jane Austen novel (an author you already know I don't like), where we have people just visiting each other's houses and gossiping about random stuff. Also, I found the MC to be kind of creepy.  2. A book/series a lot of people don't like, but you liked.  I'm gonna have to go with Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson . This book seems to be very divisive online. I&

END OF THE YEAR BOOK TAG

I know it's not literally the end of the year, but the questions for this tag are more reading plans for the final months of the year (the fall and winter). So here are my questions! As always, feel free to do this tag if you see it. 1. Are there any books you've started this year that you need to finish?  As of writing this, Jane of Lantern Hill and The Last Cuentista .  2. Do you have an autumnal book to transition to the end of the year? The Trials of Morrigan Crow (Nevermoor #1) .  3.  Is there a new release you're still waiting for? Heartstopper Volume 5! 4. What are 3 books you want to read before the end of the year? Little Women, Braiding Sweetgrass , and Piranesi . 5. Is there a book you think will shock you and become a favorite?  Well, I've already read an excerpt of it, and I have a feeling I'll love Serafina and the Black Cloak!  6. Have you already started making reading plans for 2024? Yes and no. There are a ton of books that I have planned to read

SWEET BEAN PASTE BY DURIAN SUKEGAWA

Image
OMG.  This is a new all-time favorite! Sweet Bean Paste by Durian Sukegawa is about Sentaro, an ex-convict who is paying off debt he owes by working at a small dorayaki shop. One day an elderly woman named Tokue comes in and notices the "now hiring" sign, and she asks Sentaro if she could work there. Sentaro notices that her fingers are all crooked, too, and he wonders if it's a good idea to hire her. After Tokue has him her try her own sweet bean paste recipe for the dorayaki, Sentaro loves it and hires her. More and more people start to drop by the shop and business is booming. One customer who visits frequently is a teenager named Wakana, who doesn't have a good relationship with her parents but eventually becomes friends with Sentaro and Tokue. Sentaro is happy that the shop is doing well thanks to Tokue, but the owner (his boss) finds out about Tokue and her crooked fingers, and she tells Sentaro she found out that Tokue came from a sanatorium that housed people

The Magician's Elephant by Kate DiCamillo

Image
My third Kate DiCamillo book (the first two I read were Because of Winn-Dixie and The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane waaaay back when I was elementary school. This one was also great! The Magician's Elephant is about Peter, an orphan living with an elderly soldier named Vilnia Lutz, finds out his little sister Adele is still alive after hearing it from a fortune teller. The fortune teller tells Peter that an elephant will lead him to his sister, but Peter doesn't know where to find this elephant.  Meanwhile, Adele (yes, she's alive!), is living in an orphanage, and she keeps having dreams of an elephant visiting her.   At the same time, a magician is in the city and he performs a magic trick at one of his shows that goes wrong. Instead of summoning a bouquet  of lilies, his accidentally summons an elephant. The elephant lands on a noblewoman named Madama LaVaughn, leaving her paralyzed. The magician is put in jail for destruction of property. The elephant is then

THIS TIME ITS REAL BY ANN LIANG

Image
Uh oh, (semi) unpopular opinion alert... This Time It's Real by Ann Liang is about Eliza Lin, who goes to an international school in Beijing. One day, an article she writes for a class assignment somehow goes viral. The article was about her relationship with her boyfriend. Only here's the thing: Eliza has never had a boyfriend. Yup, she made up the whole thing. So now she feels that has to convince the whole world she is dating someone. She chooses to fake-date the most popular boy at her school: Caz Song, who also happens to be a popular C-drama star. Eliza's viral article ends up also getting her an internship at Craneswift: a popular publishing company. Her main assignment as an intern is to write blog posts about the dates she and Caz go on. With all of this going on, Eliza isn't sure if her relationship with Caz could ever become real, especially since she has trouble getting close to people. Her mother's job requires her to travel a lot, and Eliza has neve

My Contrary Mary Review

Image
This is the first book of the Mary series. Written by the same authors who wrote the Lady Janies series.  This is a historical fantasy book inspired the the life of Mary, Queen of Scots (our titular Mary) and Francis II (her husband), and other real life historical figures at the time that they worked with or were related to. Mary and Francis are two of our POV characters, still told in third person. There are also some made-up brand new characters related to real historical figures, and one of them is our third POV, Ari. She is the daughter of the famed psychic and apothecary Nostradamus. Ari is not super good at being a psychic, but she is a good apothecary. It takes place in the same world as My Lady Jane , the first book of the Mary series, where everyone is either and Ethian (someone who can turn into an animal) or a Verity (those who cannot turn into animals). The Ethians and the Verities are always in conflicts with each other. In Scotland where our titular Mary is from, almos

Shuna's Journey Manga Review

Image
An underrated manga by THE Hayao Miyazaki . It's only one volume long! It was actually published back in the 1980s but it didn't get an English translation until now (well, 2022). Shuna's Journey follows Shuna, who is the prince of a small valley in the mountains which is experiencing a famine. One day Shuna meets a traveler who has some small golden seeds that are unable to be planted, but the traveler tells Shuna that he can find a giant field where golden grain grows to feed his people. The field is in the far west where the moon resides.  On his journey he runs into some slave traders, and rescues two girls from them. One is named Thea and the other girl is her sister. They are supposedly fallen princesses. Shuna tells Thea his plan, and she is happy for him and tells him if he succeeds, she should meet him in a village in the north.  But Shuna then hears from another traveler that the place Shuna needs to get to so he can find the all the golden grain is hard to reach
