Saving Winslow Review


 Another emotional Sharon Creech book!

Saving Winslow is about Louie, who takes care of a sickly young donkey whom he names Winslow. He got the donkey from Uncle Pete, a family friend who lives on a farm. Everybody in Louie's social circle thinks Winslow won't survive, but with the right tools and care, Louie proves them wrong. 

But taking care of a donkey isn't always easy! Luckily, Louie has a new friend name Nora who helps him out the most. 

It is such a short book, but from page 1, it grabbed me with its themes! If you're in the mood for an emotional story of a kid and their pet with a happy ending, check this out!

I gave it 4 stars, but that's just because some of the thematic matter might be heavy for some readers. But like all of Sharon Creech's books, they're written really well.

(Pic was found on Google Images) This was a graphic novel that I read back in middle school, but I couldn't remember a single thing that happened. Did I like it the second time around? Well... Courtney Crumrin and the Night Things by Ted Naifeh is about Courtney, a preteen girl who  with her snobby and clueless parents move in with her Great Uncle Aloysius, who lives in a mansion that looks haunted. The great uncle and his house seem to have mysteries of their own. Courtney dislikes her new school but is able to somewhat become friends with a guy nicknamed "Stain", who is an outcast like her. Stain gets picked on frequently by the popular rich kids at the school, who keep demanding money from him. Courtney gets lumped into the situation, but is able to save her new friend and defeat the bullies with some help with her new eerie creature friends at her great uncle's mansion, and with a bit of magic.  It's a very simple story, but it was very entertaining! The Baker and The Bard Review

  A cozy little fantasy adventure with queer representation! The Baker and the Bard by Fern Haught follows two friends, Juniper and Hadley. They work at a bakery and sometimes perform at an inn. One day their boss at the bakery sends them on a mission to get some glowing oyster mushrooms in a big forest for a big order a rich customer places. The friends get notice that several crops nearby are failing. They find out the cause is because of giant caterpillars that belong to a fey (fairy) named Thistle. It turns out, the fey caterpillars have some problems of their own. Juniper and Hadley find a way to help Thistle and get the mushrooms they need for the bakery. I gave it 5 stars. It's such a simple, but magical story! I think this book is perfect if you're in the mood for some adventure but with not very high stakes. Kind of like Legends and Lattes! There is also queer rep in this book. Hadley and Thistle are nonbinary, and Juniper and Hadley become a Sapphic couple.

Unfamiliar Volume 1 Review

  In the mood for a cute, chill, and funny graphic novel with witches in it? Check this out! Unfamiliar by Haley Newsome is a slice-of-life, high fantasy graphic novel following a group of friends who are witches: Planchette (on the cover) is a friendly kitchen witch, Pinyon, a witch who calls herself the "worst witch" in town, Babs, a shy witch who is part siren (type of mermaid), and Sun, a witch with a curse who also works multiple jobs and is frequently grumpy. Most of their adventures usually involve Planchette's new house, which is haunted with ghosts who will only leave if they finally have the one thing they always wanted while they were still alive.  I loved the interactions between the characters, and I loved all the magic, too! I think my favorite thing about this book were the illustrations.  So it is a 5 star book from me. I can't wait to find and read the next volume!
