Favorite Authors Part 8: Beverly Cleary

Another classic children's author! The very first book I read from Beverly Cleary was The Mouse and the Motorcycle , way back in third grade. I then read the sequels Runaway Ralph and Ralph S. Mouse . I liked all three books! Then in fourth grade I read the very first Henry Huggins book. It was good, but I never cared to read the rest of the series.  However, when I picked up Beezus and Ramona , I adored it! I then read all of the Ramona books. I read them so many times as a kid that I can quote entire passages from the books.  I have yet to watch the movie Ramona and Beezus though. Now as an adult, I read Muggie Maggie and I enjoyed it. Then I read Ellen Tebbits and enjoyed that too.  Almost all the rest of her books are on my TBR! I hope I end up liking all of them.

We need to talk about Magic for Marigold...

Image
I think this is the worst LM Montgomery book I read.  This was beyond disappointing! Magic For Marigold is a book with no actual plot to it. It's really just a bunch of short stories stringed together that narrate protagonist's Marigold Lesley's life living in the 1920s on Prince Edward Island from when she is born until she is 12 years old. But pretty much every chapter follows the same formula of sweet little imaginative Marigold getting into a situation against her will that gets her in trouble. And we are supposedly supposed to laugh at her misfortunes. Or how dorky she supposedly is for having a big imagination.  I seriously don't get this book. It has the same kind of things you would find in every LM Montgomery book (cottagecore setting in Canada, usually Prince Edward Island, sweet protagonists with a big imagination, eccentric other characters, cute cats, etc.) but the tone of the story is so cynical and...kind of asking us to laugh at how ridiculous everyone

Books I read and recommend before making this blog

This is a sample list of some books I've read before making this blog about books. And I highly recommend all of them! The Neverending Story Review

Image
I. Loved. This. Book. Words. Cannot. Express. It! 😍 😍 😍 The Neverending Story by Michael Ende follows Bastian Balthasar Bux, a boy who is very unpopular at school and whose life hasn't been the same since he lost his mother. One day at a bookstore he finds a mysterious book called "The Neverending Story". Instead of going to classes, he decides to hide out in the attic of his school and read the book.  The book containing the story titled "The Neverending Story" is set in a magical world called Fantastica where every (mostly fantasy) story ever has ever existed. The creator of the world is this goddess-like character named the Childlike Empress. But she has fallen ill, and Fantastica is slowly starting to disappear into The Nothing. A boy named Atreyu has been chosen to help save the Childlike Empress so Fantastica can be saved. Atreyu goes on a long-winded adventure where he meets new foes and friends along the way. He becomes best friends with a luckdragon

Bookshops and Bonedust Review

Image
It's been a while since I visited the wonderful world Travis Baldree created with Legends and Lattes ! (You can read the review for that book here .) It's also been a while since I took a picture of a book with one of my dolls. That's Venus McFlytrap from G3 Monster High. Bookshops and Bonedust is the prequel to Legends and Lattes . This prequel follows Viv the Orc recovering from an injury from her last battle. She spends time in this seaside town called Murk, where she becomes friendly with a colorful cast of new friends, from a restaurant owner named Brand, to a gnome named Gallina, to a carpenter named Pitts, and even her surgeon named Highlark. She also becomes enemies with a guard named Iridia, but even she becomes more of a frenemy later on. However, Viv spends most of her time at a nearby bookshop and the bakery next door to it. She becomes super close with the rattkin that owns the bookshop, named Fern, and her pet griffet Potroast (they're pictured on the c

Ash's Cabin Review

Image
My second book from Jen Wang ! The first book I read from her was The Prince and the Dressmaker , a long time ago. You can read that review here . Ash's Cabin follows Ash, a transgender mixed-race teenager who wants to find and restore their eccentric grandfather's old cabin, which is very isolated from the world. Ash gets a bunch of books from the library and watches a bunch of YouTube videos to learn how to survive in the wild. They also raise money through dog walking so they can buy supplies for camping and food. They are finally able to go on the trip when the rest of their family goes to Disneyland. Ash stays with their aunt and uncle and cousin first (who have their own house out in the country) before going to the cabin. When the aunt, uncle and cousin go on their own trip later, Ash lies about staying in their house so they can go find their grandfather's cabin. Camping out and restoring an old cabin isn't easy! But Ash and their dog Chase find surprises alon

Favorite Authors Part 7: Judy Blume

A much shorter post today. She's probably the most popular middle grade and YA author of all time! When I was a kid, I read three of Judy Blume's books: Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing, Are You There God? It's me. Margaret , and It's Not the End of the World . I love all three of them!  I tried reading Iggie's House a while ago, but I didn't like it very much. I actually DNF'd it. But now I have almost all of her books on my TBR! I especially want to read the rest of the Fudge series.  Did you know she's written a couple of books for adults, too? I am thinking about checking them out.  I found out there is a nonfiction book that came out recently by Rachelle Bergenstein that details Judy Blume and her impact on children's literature. It's called The Genius of Judy . There's also a documentary movie that came out last year about her impact on young adult literature called J udy Blume Forever (not to be confused with her book of the same name).

The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity Review

Image
Another cute romance manga I am kinda late to the party on!  The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity by Saka Mikami follows Rintaro, a boy who goes to a rather lowly public high school. The school is right next to a prestigious all-girls private high school. At Rintaro's family bakery, a girl who frequents there to eat their delicious cake is a girl named Kaoruko. Rintaro starts talking to Kaoruko and they hit it off pretty well, and they find themselves falling in love with each other. However, she goes to the prestigious all girls high school, and Rintaro wonders if they can even keep seeing each other if their respective friend groups have tension with each other since they come from rival high schools. The two teenagers find a way to make it work! I've only read the first volume so far but I am already obsessed. It's just like how I felt when I started A Sign of Affection (speaking of which, I need to read the second omnibus for that!). I've just really been cr

Anime/Manga Poem #6

Image
Here's the thing: today's poem is inspired by One Piece. And today is One Piece's 25th anniversary!!! Yay!!!  However, One Piece has sooo much music surrounding it, since it is a 25 year franchise. So instead of one of the openings or other random songs, I decided to share a video of the live-action actors having fun. Ironically, I haven't seen the live action version yet. I do follow the official page and most of the actors on Instagram, though. This will be one of the last poems I will post in a while. I will resume with more anime/manga poems in December.  Poem: Come with me to the colorful world Of colorful people Of colorful fruit And all things magic Doesn’t matter who you are You’re never too old To follow your dreams So start sailing! Pirate or marine Or…something else Go find the one thing You’re looking for You’ll run into some jerks—oh yes Jerks are everywhere, they say But with the found family that you found You’ll be protect

Anime/Manga Poem #5

Image
Today's poem is inspired by one of the cutest and most relatable romance anime of all time: Kimi ni Todoke! Above is the first opening. Poem: To think that Meeting you Would spark Something new To think that Meeting you Would mean meeting New friends To think that Meeting you Would mean The respect of classmates To think that Meeting you Would mean Getting a cute dog To think that Meeting you Would spark Some girl drama To think that Meeting you Would lead to The best birthday ever To think that Meeting you Would mean A misunderstanding To think that Meeting you Would lead to An awkward Valentine’s Day But to think that Meeting you Would lead to us Becoming an official couple

Anime/manga Poem #4

Image
Today's poem is inspired by the romantic comedy Lovely Complex! Both openings of the anime are above! The beginning of the poem is actually pulled from the second opening (second video).  Poem: Say! Hey hey hey hey hey hey hey… Whatever That sounds like something Umibozou would write Right? Let’s go to his next concert! Ugh. Our friends are shipping us again. This isn’t an anime This is real life! Whatever Hopefully no one will come between us Save the drama… Hey! Are you listening?! Stop dozin’ off! Ugh. Now our friends are laughing at us They really want us To be a real-life comedy duo Quit it, all of you Let’s just dress in the latest trends And get tickets to that fire Umibozou concert.

Anime/Manga Poem #3

Image
Today's poem was inspired by the classic magical girl/mecha series by CLAMP, Magic Knight Rayearth!  The video above is the full song of the first opening. Poem: We could feel it in our hearts We could feel it in our soul We could feel it in our minds We were the chosen ones Chosen to save this world This world bent on willpower But we didn’t know What would be ahead of us A world full of turmoil Of heartbreak Things aren’t always what they seem We might be controlling giant robots Called rune gods But we are not angels As Lantis said “If Cephiro were truly beautiful The flowers would bloom All on their own.”

Favorite Authors Part 6: Nicola Yoon

Nicola Yoon doesn't have as many books compared to the previous authors I talked about (although she has written several short stories that appear in short story anthologies), but what she has written so far has mostly been awesome! The first book I read from her was The Sun is Also a Star , way back in 2019. I ADORED this book! Thanks to this book, I was able to get back into reading for fun again. It's still an all-time favorite. I need to watch the movie. I then read Everything, Everything and I really didn't like it! 🙁 I gave it two stars. The thing that ruined the book for me was the twist towards the end. I am not planning on watching the movie. But then I got Instructions for Dancing as a birthday gift a few years later, and I loved it too! I hope this gets turned into a movie. Recently she has a new book that came out that is her first adult fiction novel. It's called One of Our Kind . I am planning on reading it! I hope I like it too.  So why do I like Nic

Anime/Manga Inspired Poem #2

Image
Today's poem is inspired by Ai Yazawa's most underrated work, Gokinjo Monogatari! Above is the opening.  I watched the anime many, many years ago on YouTube (before they got taken down) and really loved it! Now that the manga has been translated in English and released by Viz Media, the series will gain so many new fans. Someday I might get the whole manga too and reread the whole story. And read the parts that weren't in the anime. Here's the poem: Forget about those guys you think are cute What’s cute are these cute clothes I am making! Don’t forget the insignia Of the angel holding a strawberry On each one What? It’s cute clothes for teenage girls But you’re making children’s clothes? And you’re making clothes for stuffed animals? What’s my friend since childhood and next-door neighbor up to? I dunno, I think he’s makin’ walkie talkies His himbo friend just sketches people His punk friend just makes video games Ugh, is that popular pretty gi

Anime/Manga Inspired Poem #1

Image
Hey everyone, for the next few days I will be sharing poems I wrote inspired by my favorite anime and manga series! Today's is inspired by Kaleido Star. You can watch the first opening for the anime above. The poem Run! Jump! Fly! Twirl! Maybe a kick here or two! Quick! Grab onto the beam! Or your friend’s hands. Show business is busy Not always very nice But remind me again why am I here Something about smiles? People from all over come to this spot in LA To see their favorite fairy tale in a whole new light They have to look high, into the sky To see all our hard work So whether it’s acrobatics, ballet, or singing, too. The stage is for all! Yes, even you.

Popular Books I Didn't Like Part 3

Welcome to Part 3! How do you feel about these books? Here are the first two parts in case you missed them: Part 1 , Part 2 1. The Outsiders by SE Hinton . Goodreads summary here . I found this book to be so sad! 2 stars. 2. The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood . Goodreads summary here . I do think the author came from a good place when writing this, but I found the story to be too heavy for me. Some parts of it were a bit confusing, too. That includes the worldbuilding. 2 stars. 3. Beloved by Toni Morrison . Goodreads summary here . Again, I like the reasons why the author wrote this, but the story was still too sad and heavy for me. It was also confusing at times. 2 stars.  4. Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad . Goodreads summary here . The story was too sad and a bit disturbing at times. 2 stars. 5. Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger . Goodreads summary here . Sometimes the main character Holden was kinda relatable, but sometimes he was just a jerk. I found most of the story

Underrated Books Part 10

We've finally arrived to part 10 of my underrated books series! I hope you like these books too. Or are planning on reading them thanks to me.  Goodreads links are provided, too. 1. Word by Word by Korey Stamper .  It's an informational nonfiction book on how the Merriam-Webster dictionary is made, written by someone who has worked there.  2. How to Eat Fried Worms by Thomas Rockwell . A hilarious middle grade book about a boy named Billy who won't lose to a bet to eat fried worms. After all, he needs the money to buy a new bike! 3. Cake Pop Crush by Suzanne Nelson . A cute middle grade book of a girl who tries to save her family's old fashioned bakery when a rival bakery comes into town. And she catches the attention of the owner's son. 4. Bone series by Jeff Smith . An epic (and sometimes funny) fantasy adventure with a unique art style.

Aquicorn Cove Review

Image
Did you love the Tea Dragon Society by Kay O'Neill ? Here's another graphic novel from them! Aquicorn Cove is about Lana and her father. They go to the coast to visit her aunt to help clean up after a big storm. During the cleanup Lana finds and takes care of what she thinks is a seahorse. It turns out it's actually a magical creature called an aquicorn! Lana's aunt actually has a connection to aquicorns, and she tells Lana all about it. The aquicorns also live in coral reef that has been falling apart due to human activity, and they probably have a connection to the coast having bigger, more frequent storms. Lana and her family find a way to save the coral--and the aquicorns, too.  It was a very sweet magical book with a focus on environmentalism! The artwork is lovely, too. There's queer rep, too--the leader of the aquicorns in nonbinary. I should warn you that there is a flashback of a loved one who dies in the book. So this was a 5 star from me!

Favorite Authors Part 5: Sharon Creech

Welcome back to my Favorite Authors series! Today it's all about Sharon Creech. The first book I read from Sharon Creech was Absolutely Normal Chaos , way back when I was in middle school. This book blew me away!  I didn't read another Sharon Creech book until I read probably her most popular book Walk Two Moons a few years ago. The book was good, but the ending was so sad! Still one of the saddest endings I ever read for a book.  I then decided to read more of her books. The next one I read was Ruby Holler. Then I read Chasing Redbird . Then I read Bloomability . I really liked all of them! Especially Bloomability .  Fun fact! Walk Two Moons, Bloomability, Chasing Redbird , and Absolutely Normal Chaos all take place in the same universe.  Unfortunately, I then read The Great Unexpected , and I DNF it. I also DNF'd Replay .  Luckily, I read The Unfinished Angel and Granny Torelli Makes Soup after that, and liked both of them!  Wanna know something interesting? I actua

The Baker and The Bard Review

Image
A cozy little fantasy adventure with queer representation! The Baker and the Bard by Fern Haught follows two friends, Juniper and Hadley. They work at a bakery and sometimes perform at an inn. One day their boss at the bakery sends them on a mission to get some glowing oyster mushrooms in a big forest for a big order a rich customer places. The friends get notice that several crops nearby are failing. They find out the cause is because of giant caterpillars that belong to a fey (fairy) named Thistle. It turns out, the fey caterpillars have some problems of their own. Juniper and Hadley find a way to help Thistle and get the mushrooms they need for the bakery. I gave it 5 stars. It's such a simple, but magical story! I think this book is perfect if you're in the mood for some adventure but with not very high stakes. Kind of like Legends and Lattes! There is also queer rep in this book. Hadley and Thistle are nonbinary, and Juniper and Hadley become a Sapphic couple.

The Secret Letters Review

Image
Another great book by Margaret Peterson Haddix ! The Secret Letters follows two preteens, Colin and Navaeh. Colin's single mother works as a consultant to help people tidy up their homes and remove and sell clutter. Navaeh's dad is the total opposite: he is known as the "Junk King" in their small town and buys old junk from people and keeps all of it. Their parents are huge business rivals!  Navaeh's dad gets called to buy out the stuff in the storage unit for a guy named Arthur Mongold. But when Navaeh and her whole family get there, the storage unit is empty! Except for a single letter. Navaeh's dad assumes Colin's mother must've stolen everything. His family tells him not to jump to conclusions and they will try to figure out where the Mongold's stuff went, and who wrote the mysterious letter that was left. One day, Colin, his mother, and three teenagers she hired are cleaning out one house when Colin discovers a shoebox underneath the floorb

Favorite Childhood Online Games

Did you play any of these as a kid? I don't play on any of the ones that require an account anymore (plus Club Penguin no longer exists and my Webkinz account expired a long time ago), but the other ones I still play once in a while! 1. Webkinz-   I still have all 50 of my Webkinz (the stuffed animals in real life, I mean)!  Webkinz was everything to me all throughout elementary school.  2. Club Penguin- I played this one mostly in fourth and fifth grade (ages 9-10). It was a lot of fun! Although it was way more fun if you were a member (which I wasn't).  3. Poptropica- I always made my character look like me. Did you know the creator of this game is also the author of Diary of a Wimpy Kid ? 4. Funbrain- My favorites on here were the swinging game, the one where a guy runs on logs, Mighty Girl/Guy, and the Star Climber. They also had some online books, like Tess's Tree and the earliest draft of Wimpy Kid . 5. AddictingGames- well, I mostly played Red Remover on here. At one

Love and Gelato Rant Review

Image
TW: Parent dying, toxic relationships   Another huge disappointment... Love and Gelato by Jenna Evans Welch is about Lina, who just lost her single mother. Her mother's final wish was for Lina to visit the country she went to college, which was Italy. Apparently Lina's birth father is in Italy, too, and Lina can't believe she's finally meeting him. His name is Howard and he lives and works in a cemetery, much to Lina's surprise. Howard's coworker Sonia gives Lina her mother's journal when she lived and studied in Italy. Lina decides to read through it, as her mother didn't talk much about Italy and her father. One thing that stands out to her is her mother wrote down on one of the pages "I made a terrible mistake". Line tries to figure out what mistake her mother made living in Italy that made her go back to the US. While this is all happening, Lina then meets and starts hanging out with a guy her age who lives down the street from Howard, who

Favorite Authors Part 4: Kate DiCamillo

Welcome back! Today we will talk about bestselling author Kate DiCamillo! The first book I read from her was The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane , way back when I was in third grade. This book was sooo beautiful, it instantly became an all time favorite, and it's still my favorite DiCamillo book. The second book I read from her when I was in fourth grade was the popular Because of Winn-Dixie . I actually watched the movie years earlier and enjoyed it, and I liked the book, too.  But I didn't pick up another DiCamillo book until I became an adult. The book I picked up was The Magician's Elephant, which I reviewed back in 2023 (link here ). I loved it, too! I plan on watching the movie sometime. I then read The Puppets of Spelhorst , which was also fun (link to review here ). A sequel for it came out recently, and I have it on my TBR. Unfortunately, I DNF The Tiger Rising . It was too sad for me. Now the rest of her books are on my TBR. I did actually watch the movie fo
