Bianca Torre is Afraid of Everything Review

Image
TW: Mentioning of murder Whoa! Where do I begin? Bianca Torre is Afraid of Everything by Justine Pucella Winans is about Bianca, a nonbinary lesbian teenager who has a long list of fears. They spend a lot of their free time either secretly observing and making up stories about their neighbors, watching anime with their best friend Anderson, and birdwatching. But one day, Bianca witnesses something terrible happen to one of their neighbors: a guy they call Mr. Conspiracy. He gets murdered by a mysterious person wearing a bird mask. Bianca, Anderson, and later a girl Bianca has a crush on named Elaine all work together to solve the murder mystery.  This book got me hooked from page 1! And it might seem a bit odd, because I don't usually vibe with murder mysteries, but this author and this story made it work for me! The mystery part of it was cool. I think what I liked the most was the characters. They were all so likable and so relatable (well, the good guys, definitely not the bad

The Pirate Captain's Daughter Review

Image
TW: Mentions of death and injuries Do you have a favorite stand-alone book about pirates? The Pirate Captain's Daughter by Eve Bunting follows Catherine, the daughter of a notorious pirate captain. After her mother dies, Catherine decides to join her father's pirate crew as a musician, all while disguised as a boy named Charlie. Unfortunately, being a pirate isn't as romantic as she thought it was! Most of the crew is pretty aggressive or dismissive, the conditions on the ship aren't very sanitary, nor is the food any good. Aside from her father and another member named Mr. Trimble, she does find companionship in the cabin boy around her age named William, and (kind of) Red, one of the other musicians. There is the constant worry that everyone will find out she is a girl. Additionally, one particular pirate, named Herc, really wants to steal a jewel that Catherine's father stole a long time ago, and he and his little friend Hopper really don't make things easy

Unfamiliar Volume 2 Brief Review

Image
Yeah, I just talked about the first book a few days ago, but I got to talk about the sequel! Something I rarely ever do, but that's because this sequel blew my mind! Unfamiliar Volume 2 by Haley Newsome is the sequel to Unfamiliar Volume 1 . In this sequel, it is a lot more story driven, a lot more darker, and a lot more serious. There's more character development, and twists about some characters we've met in previous volumes. While out witchy girls continue dealing with mishaps mostly involving ghosts, two of our characters fall in love (yup, a Sapphic romance! 😃). But overall, it still has the same cozy vibes just like the first book. A pure 5 star book ! I hope I convinced you to put these books on your TBR if you haven't already. I'd seriously love to read anything else this author puts out! I've also started watching her YouTube channel. 😉

Unfamiliar Volume 1 Review

Image
In the mood for a cute, chill, and funny graphic novel with witches in it? Check this out! Unfamiliar by Haley Newsome is a slice-of-life, high fantasy graphic novel following a group of friends who are witches: Planchette (on the cover) is a friendly kitchen witch, Pinyon, a witch who calls herself the "worst witch" in town, Babs, a shy witch who is part siren (type of mermaid), and Sun, a witch with a curse who also works multiple jobs and is frequently grumpy. Most of their adventures usually involve Planchette's new house, which is haunted with ghosts who will only leave if they finally have the one thing they always wanted while they were still alive.  I loved the interactions between the characters, and I loved all the magic, too! I think my favorite thing about this book were the illustrations.  So it is a 5 star book from me. I can't wait to find and read the next volume!

Booksnob Book Tag

I first saw this tag over on the YouTube channel of @ttreadsya . Their video for this tag can be viewed here . Feel free to do this tag if you see this! I'd love to see your answers. 1. Adaptation Snob: Do you always read the book before you see the movie? Nope! There are some books I've read after I watched their movie adaptations, but that's usually because I didn't know that they were based off of books. 2. Format Snob: if you had to choose only one format for the rest of your life - print, electronic, or audio - which would it be? Maybe audio. It's a lot more convenient to use. 3. Ship Snob: would you date or marry a non-reader? Nope! Since reading is one of my special interests, one of the ways I bond with other humans is through talking about what they like to read. I mean, we could still talk about favorite movies and shows, since I like those too, but books have so much to offer, too. 4. Genre Snob: You have to ditch one genre and never read it again, wh
