THE MOOMINS AND THE GREAT FLOOD REVIEW

Image
A while ago I listened to the very first Moomin book ever by Tove Jansson on audiobook .  It is called The Moomins and the Great Flood .  In this very first book we follow Moomintroll and Moominmamma as they go on a journey to find Moominpappa, as he went away with the creatures called the Hattifatteners, and they are all looking for a new place to live. Along the way they meet "a little creature" (who is really the character of Sniff) who joins them on their journey and Tulipa, a fairy from a tulip flower that protected them from a giant serpent. They also encounter a strange old man, a scary ant-lion, more Hattifatteners, and a red-haired boy who lives in a lighthouse and who briefly met Moominpappa and knows which way he went.  As they all search for Moominpappa, a huge rainstorm happens which causes a flood. When the rain stops the team finds a message in a bottle from Moominpappa saying he is safe and he built a new house for the family to live in (the famous blue and r

SO WHAT WAS MY MOST FAVE READ OF 2022?

Image
Wait! You're probably thinking. Why are you talking about your favorite read in 2022 when we are halfway past 2023? Well, @bookdragon_24 over on Instagram tagged me in a post of her favorite book she read in 2022 a while ago, and I wanted to add onto the conversation. Thanks Ellie! This was a hard decision because I liked and loved a lot of books last year, but for the sake of this post I will have to go with Where the Mountain meet the Moon by Grace Lin . It was the very first book I reviewed on my blog! You can check out said review here . Here's a pic of it again:

I'VE STARTED READING SPYXFAMILY!!!

Image
I unfortunately can't watch the anime right now because I don't have a subscription to Crunchyroll. But reading the manga is equally a fun experience! Spy x Family by Tatsuya Endo takes place in a location that seems to be inspired by Germany during the Cold War in real life. This fictional country is divided in two: Westalis and Ostania. Our MC is a spy with the codename Twilight and is from Westalis. He is tasked with a mission to get information from a shady government official from Ostania named Donovan Desmond, who only makes public appearances at his son's elite school. Twilight has to carry out the mission by adopting a kid, getting married to some woman, enrolling the kid into the academy, and pretending to be a parent in order to get information on Donovan. Twilight adopts the name Loid and adopts a telepathic girl from an orphanage named Anya. Anya immediately becomes attached to Loid, which is really cute to watch. Like all kids, she is a handful, but also real

Radio Silence Review

Image
TW: Mentioning of toxic relations, cyberbullying, underage drinking, and mild discussions of sex Man, I have some really mixed feelings about this one. Radio Silence by Alice Oseman is a YA contemporary book about Frances Janvier. It is her last year of high school and she is aiming to go to Cambridge University. She doesn't seem to care about anything else except being top of the class and Universe City, a podcast series. Frances considers herself a shy geeky girl and doesn't let anyone see the real her at school. As a result, she has a lot of "fake" friends. As in friends who only like her studious side. One day the creator of Universe City reaches out to her on social media and asks her to do official art for the podcast after seeing her fanart of the series on Tumblr. At first she is reluctant, but then she eventually finds out the creator of Universe City is a student at her school, a guy named Aled Last (if you read Heartstopper, this is the same guy!). They

THINGS I LOVE IN BOOKS

I wasn't tagged in this, but I though this tag looked neat. I first saw it over at @hades.reads Instagram page.  As usual, I don't tag anyone. Feel free to do this tag if you see it! So here is everything I realized I love seeing in books: Sassy/funny characters friends to lovers rivals to lovers fake dating dual POV (can be first or third person) mysteries found family Queer characters (anyone underneath the LGBT umbrella!) Disabled characters (physical and nonphysical disabilities!) Ethnically diverse cast of characters self-discovery/self-acceptance stories strong friendships cool magic systems rich worldbuilding cozy settings magical creatures (especially fairies, dragons, and mermaids) likeable characters you want to root for unlikeable characters are unlikable on purpose references to anime/other cartoons witches challenging/questioning societal norms linear storytelling What are your favorite things in books? Do you like any of the ones I just mentioned?

CHEER UP LOVE AND POMPOMS REVIEW

Image
Another graphic novel that I really like! I've been seeing this book floating around the bookish spaces I follow, but I didn't pick it up until just recently. But I am glad I finally did, as this book was a delight.  In Cheer Up: Love and Pompoms by Crystal Frasier , Val Wise , and Oscar O. Jupiter , we follow two characters: Annie and Bebe. Annie is very antisocial and would rather study, but her mother encourages her to join the school cheerleading team so she can have something else to do rather than studying and also to have some extracurriculars on her college applications. Anne is also a lesbian. Bebe is on the cheerleading team and is a huge people-pleaser. She is also transgender, and the first trans girl on the cheerleading squad. Annie and Bebe used to be friends, but after Annie joins the cheerleading squad, they rekindle their friendship.  The story is about the girls' and their cheerleading squad improving their cheer skills, gaining popularity, and also look

SPILL THE TEA CHALLENGE

I was tagged in this challenge over on Instagram by @edit.write.read.caffeinate . Check out her page! And as always, I don't tag anyone specifically. Feel free to do this tag if you feel like it! T-A book that taught me something: Laziness Does Not Exist by Dr. Devon Price . (You can see my review for it here ). This book was all about embracing rest and how being a workaholic is a product of capitalism.  E-A book I didn't want to end: I am kind of cheating with this answer because it's actually a graphic novel series, but I will say the Bone series by Jeff Smith . As of writing this post I have 5 books left to read in the series and the story is soooo good I don't want it to end just yet ! There is smaller additional material but I don't feel like reading all of it. I am only reading the main series.  A-A book by an author I love: The Blue Castle by LM Montgomery . I read it last year and it was an instant favorite (review here )! I might be done with the Anne se

AN UPDATE FOR MY LOVE OF BOBA TEA

Don't worry! I still love boba tea! It's just that...remember in my last post on boba tea which was like, months ago? I said that my mom and I only went to Kung Fu Tea and that we got boba tea kits from H Mart that were only one flavor. Well, since that post, things have changed! We have found another local boba tea shop in my area that not only sells a variety of drinks, but also serves food. My favorite drinks from this other local tea shop is the Purple Taro Milk Tea and the Mango Milk Tea. My favorite food items that they sell are Popcorn Chicken and Green Onion Pancakes.  As for boba tea kits, my mom and I found a boba tea variety kit from Costco. The flavors they have are: classic milk tea, creme brulee, taro, and passion fruit. There are even three types of boba: caramel boba, fruit boba, and brown sugar boba. They are all really delicious, but my most favorite is the passion fruit tea with fruity boba! So yeah, I seem to have this little project going on where I go arou
