Greenglass House by Kate Milford is a middle grade mystery book set at a mysterious inn called Greenglass House, which itself is situated in a small town known for its smugglers. The owners of the inn are the Pine family, which consists of Mr and Mrs Pine and their 12 year old son Milo. Milo was looking forward to a quiet and cozy winter break, but then all of a sudden a handful of guests arrive. The guests are: Mr. Vinge, an elderly man who always wears multicolored socks. Georgie, a young blue haired woman who likes to read and invent things, Mrs. Hereward, an elderly woman who probably has ties connected to the Greenglass House, Dr. Gowervine, a professor who likes to study stained glass, and Clem, a red haired young woman who likes to exercise. All
of the guests seem like they are trying to investigate secrets of the
house, especially regarding Doc Holystone, a famous smuggler who was
once the owner of the house. Since they got so many guests, the Pines have to call their cook Mrs. Caraway and her daughter Lizzie to help with the food. Milo also meets and befriends Meddy, the youngest daughter of Mrs. Caraway.
The mystery begins when Milo sees that one of the guests dropped what looks like a map, but he can't figure out what the map is all about. Then guests' items start to go randomly go missing. Milo and Meddy team up and play a role playing game (their RPG characters are named Negret and Sirin) where they try to investigate the guests, their items, and other secrets about and around the house.
This book definitely had me on the edge of my seat! It was such an intricate mystery story, and the plot twists blew my mind. I also just really liked the setting. Being snowed in at an inn where you play a game to investigate situations, and everybody is not what they seem.
I gave it 4 stars. I took off one star because the story did get a little confusing at the halfway mark, and then it got kind of scary and more serious at the three-quarter mark (but it does have a happy ending). Other than that, it was a cool book!
