August Wrap-Up

Here are all the books I read in August with their respective links to their reviews, if applicable. Yeah, I've gotten kinda lazy to rewrite their summaries here. And some I didn't write summaries because they are sequels. 😂 I read a total of 12  books. Yeah, more than I usually read on average each month! But that's because some of these books were graphic novels/manga or thin middle grade books (almost novellas?) that I could finish within a day. So that meant more books were read.  What was your favorite/least favorite book you read in August? One Piece Volumes 2, 3, and 4 (3 books) - All 5 stars! Skullduggery Pleasant 1 -Full review here . 4.5 stars.  The Tea Dragon Festival and The Tea Dragon Tapestry (2 books) -Both 5 stars! Middle School and Other Disasters: Worst Broommate Ever - Full review here . 5 stars My Calamity Jane -Full review here . 4.5 stars Comet in Moominland -Full review here . 4.5 stars Spy x Family Volume 2 - 5 stars Ronia the Robber's Daughter

Ronia: The Robber's Daughter Review

Image
I found out about this book because there is a CGI Studio Ghibli series of the same name directed by Goro Miyazaki (Hayao Miyazaki's son). I might or might not watch it sometime. The book is also by Astrid Lindgren, who is most well known for writing the Pippi Longstocking series. I could never get into the Pippi series (shocker, I know!), but this stand alone novel worked for me! Ronia the Robber's Daughter is about, well, Ronia, who is the daughter of Matt. Matt is the leader of a band of thieves who live somewhere in a big forest. Matt has a rivalry against Borka, who is the leader of another gang of thieves in the same forest. One day while hanging out outside, Ronia meets Borka's son Birk, who is around her age. They argue a lot at first, but then they soon become friends behind their fathers' backs. Eventually their fathers' find out and the two gangs get into a fight over it. It ends up with Ronia and Birk running away to live in a cave together. They enjoy

Underrated Books Part 3!

The last post I made about underrated books was back in April of this year. Granted, I didn't read a whole lot of books that I thought were "underrated" by the online bookish community standards. Or at least considered underrated by the people that I follow (on both bookstagram and booktube). But two of these are books I read as a kid that I don't see a lot of people talk about online. So here are 4 more underrated books that I love that you need to read, too! 1. Ruby Holler by Sharon Creech . I read this book earlier this year and so far it's my favorite book from this author. Ruby Holler is about twin brother and sister Dallas and Florida who have grown up living either in a run down orphanage run by a cruel and greedy couple, or with foster families who mistreat them. Then they are taken in by an elderly couple named Tiller and Sairy, who live on a farm called Ruby Holler. Tiller and Sairy have been saving up money to go on two separate trips (Tiller a cano

Ogress and the Orphans Review

Image
This is the second Kelly Barnhill book I've read so far. The first one I read was The Girl who Drank the Moon back in 2021, which I gave 4 stars to. The Ogress and The Orphans is set in a fantasy world in a small town called Stone-in-the-Glen, which has fallen on hard times ever since the town's library burned down and other buildings such as the school have mysteriously been destroyed, too. Now no one trusts each other and almost nobody ever leaves their homes. The town orphanage has also been struggling financially. The owners and the orphans are very supportive of one another, and they've been trying to get the town to come together again, especially on market days where they sell handmade soap and food from their mini-farm, but to no avail. At the same time on the outskirts of the town, an ancient Ogress has started to live there and she has noticed how the town has been struggling, so every night she secretly leaves food, baked goods, and handmade cards to the people

My Calamity Jane Review

Image
Another great historical fantasy book that is the third installment of the Lady Janies series! My Calamity Jane follows the perspective of 3 characters: Calamity Jane, Annie Oakley, and Frank Butler (all told in 3rd person POV). They are part of Buffalo Bill's traveling sharpshooter show, and they also track down garou,  aka people who are werewolves. One day while fighting a group of garou in a factory, Jane gets bitten by one and so she becomes a garou herself, which is a problem because she thinks her and her mates have a disdain for garou. Except Frank is secretly one himself. Annie does have a disdain for garou at first because she used to work for a family of one and they treated her terribly, but then when she meets other people who are garou and eventually finds out Frank (whom she has a crush on) and Jane are garou, her opinion eventually changes. Jane finds an ad in a newspaper about a cure for garou, and she goes out farther west of the country to find who is giving ou

Skullduggery Pleasant Book 1 Review

Image
This book (well, the whole series really!) has been on my TBR for so long and I finally got to find and read the first book! Book 1 of the Skullduggery Pleasant series by Derek Landy follows Stephanie, a twelve year old whose rich fantasy author Uncle Gordon recently died and left her (just her, not even her parents!) a giant house. A little after Gordon's funeral, she becomes acquainted with Skullduggery Pleasant, a magical detective (who is really a talking skeleton) who was good friends with Gordon. As it turns out, a lot of the fantasy stories Gordon wrote about are mostly true. Stephanie is blown away over the fact that there is magic in the mundane. There is a looming threat of an ancient enemy named Serpine that is trying to acquire a magical scepter to resurrect the Faceless Ones, and bring doom to the world. Despite his inital protests, Stephanie decides to join Skullduggery to stop Serpine and his evil plan.  I loved the magic system, the lore, and especially the characte

Comet in Moominland Review

Image
I listened to the 2nd Moomins book by Tove Jansson on audiobook a while ago!  Comet in Moominland picks right up where the very first book, Moomins and the Great Flood , left off (review for that here ). The Moomins and Sniff are living in their iconic blue house, and go on many adventures and meet new friends along the way. These new friends are actually the rest of the iconic Moomin characters: Snufkin, Little My, the Snorkmaiden, the Snork, etc. Yes, they all make their very first appearances in this book. The overarching plot is that there are rumors of a prediction that a comet is going to come to Moominland and destroy everything, and everyone is really scared! But since it's the Moomins, you know it will have a happy ending. The comet does fly through the sky and everyone sees it, but it doesn't land in Moominland. Everything is fine, obviously. Just like the other two Moomin books I read, this was a beautiful, heartfelt, masterpiece. I gave it 4.5 stars , but that wa

The 2nd and 3rd Tea Dragon Books

Image
I can't delve too deep into them since they are the 2nd and 3rd book of the series, but I will tell you right now that I loved them and I gave them both 5 stars! They are just as heartwarming, whimsical, magical, and sweet as the first one, and have both great LGBT and disability rep. I will tell you the 2nd book is a prequel to the first one. And in the third book the characters from both the 1st and 2nd book all come together for a perfect conclusion.  The Tea Dragon Society series is now an all-time favorite graphic novel series for me. It literally had everything I love in fictional storytelling. Thank you Kay O'Neill for your creation!

MIDDLE SCHOOL AND OTHER DISASTERS REVIEW

Image
Middle School and Other Disasters: Worst Broommate Ever! by Wanda Coven is a middle grade book (first of a series) of a girl named Heidi Heckelbeck who starts middle school at a boarding school that secretly offers magic classes (casting spells and stuff like that, not magic tricks). Heidi herself comes from a long line of witches who attended the same boarding school. Heidi is nervous about starting middle school without her family nearby and her friends from elementary school, but when she arrives there, she ends up loving the campus. She also runs into an old friend of hers named Sunny, and also becomes friends with Sunny's roommate, Annabelle. Unfortunately, Heidi's roommate is a girl she always had a huge rivalry with since second grade: a girl named Melanie Maplethrope! Now she thinks middle school will be a nightmare, but then she learns she and Melanie have a lot more in common than they thought...and maybe they could become friends? Man, this book was so refreshing
